NFL Scout Calls Shedeur Sanders 'Flashiest, Most Overhyped Game Manager' I've Graded

Adam WellsMar 28, 2025

Shedeur Sanders is turning out to be one of the most polarizing prospects in the 2025 NFL draft.

One scout told Bob McGinn of GoLongTD.com (h/t Tyler Dunne of GoLongTD.com) that Sanders is the "flashiest, most overhyped game manager I’ve ever graded."

The scout went on to say there's "no way" Sanders should be a top-three pick and he's "at best" a second- or third-round prospect.

There were differing opinions just among the scouts McGinn talked with. A different one said they have Sanders ranked as the best quarterback in the class and he will "start from Day 1 wherever he goes."

As tends to happen when you get such extreme opinions, the truth of Sanders' actual talent level is probably somewhere in the middle.

B/R's NFL scouting department has Sanders ranked as the second-best quarterback, behind Cam Ward, and No. 18 overall prospect.

In his scouting report for B/R, Dame Parson cited Teddy Bridgewater as Sanders' pro comparison because of his "natural and pure passing abilities" but noted defenses with consistent pass-rush packages will "disrupt his timing and speed up his process."

The biggest factor that will likely determine Sanders' level of success at the next level is his ability to get rid of the ball quickly. He had the 15th-highest average time to throw in FBS last season at 2.83 seconds.

Sanders was sacked 94 times in two seasons at Colorado. Even accounting for the Buffaloes' poor offensive line, he has a knack for holding onto the ball in ways that he can get away with playing primarily against Big 12 defenses.

This was a similar complaint that Caleb Williams, who was regarded as a much better prospect, faced coming out of USC when was going up against Pac-12 defenses.

Williams wound up getting sacked an NFL-high 68 times as a rookie and ranked 35th out of 43 qualified quarterbacks in time to throw last season, despite a porous offensive line for the Chicago Bears.

Sanders will have to prove he is able to get the ball out on time and avoid the traps he fell into at times because defenses at the NFL level will take advantage of them in ways that his college opponents weren't able to.
