4-Star Trashawn Ruffin Flips to UNC from Texas A&M; Bill Belichick's Top Recruit
North Carolina head coach Bill Belichick landed a major recruiting target Monday.
As Eli Lederman of ESPN relayed, defensive tackle Trashawn Ruffin flipped his commitment from Texas A&M to the Tar Heels. Lederman noted Ruffin is the highest-rated recruit for North Carolina since it hired the legendary coach in December.
According to 247Sports' composite rankings, Ruffin is a 4-star prospect and the No. 195 overall player and No. 24 defensive lineman in the 2026 class.
He initially chose the Aggies over powerhouse programs such as Ohio State, Georgia, Texas, Michigan and Florida State, per Lederman, underscoring how the top teams in the country viewed his potential.
North Carolina rolled out the red carpet for the prospect, as he took an unofficial visit and attended the Tar Heels' men's basketball game against rival Duke on March 8. Lederman noted he even met former North Carolina star defensive players Lawrence Taylor and Julius Peppers.
Ruffin's physicality and ability to overpower interior offensive linemen immediately stands out. While he projects as a dominant run-stuffer at the next level, he can also take on double teams and open up blitzing lanes for his teammates against the pass.
North Carolina might still have its work cut out for it to ensure he is part of the 2026 class, though, as Cameron Ohnysty of USA Today's Aggies Wire noted he is scheduled to take an official visit to Texas A&M on June 13 after visiting the Tar Heels and LSU.
For now, Ruffin is a key addition to a 2026 class that 247Sports' composite rankings slot as the 22nd-best group in the country.
It is still early in the process for the 2026 class, so Belichick has plenty of time to move up the list as he convinces recruits to join his efforts to turn around the North Carolina program that hasn't won an ACC title since 1980.
