Report: Mavs' Anthony Davis, Dereck Lively II Progressing Toward Injury Returns
Anthony Davis and Dereck Lively II are both "progressing toward an in-season return" for the Dallas Mavericks as they continue to rehab injuries, according to NBA insider Marc Stein.
Stein noted, however, it "remains to be seen" if either player will actually see the court in a game again this season.
Davis has been sidelined since suffering a left adductor strain on Feb. 8 in his first game with the Mavericks. Shams Charania of ESPN reported on Jan. 22 that Lively was expected to miss two to three months with a fracture in his foot.
Per Stein, Davis participated in two-on-two play over the weekend for the first time since suffering the injury.
The former Los Angeles Lakers star played 31 minutes against the Houston Rockets before suffering a non-contact injury in the third quarter. He posted 26 points, 16 rebounds and seven assists prior to his exit.
Davis was traded from the Lakers the night of Feb. 1 in exchange for a return including Luka Dončić. He missed two games on either side of the trade with a groin injury prior to his Mavericks debut.
ESPN's Shams Charania reported on March 4 that Davis' season could be over.
The Mavericks said three days later a re-evaluation of the injury revealed Davis "is improving daily and has therefore been cleared for more dynamic on-court movements," but did not offer a timeline for his return.
The Mavs are already missing Kyrie Irving, who suffered a torn ACL on March 3, for the rest of the season.
When healthy, Davis is a 25 points-per-game producer and a Defensive Player of the Year candidate. But both he and Irving have long injury histories that have kept them from ever playing a full NBA season.
The Mavs are 32-33 on the season, which puts them in 10th place in the Western Conference.
