Yankees' Luis Gil Won't Throw for At Least 6 Weeks Due to Lat Injury, Aaron Boone Says
The start of the 2025 season is just a few weeks away, but the New York Yankees already suffered a major blow to their starting rotation.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters on Monday that starting pitcher Luis Gil has been diagnosed with a high-grade right lat strain and will not throw for at least six weeks.
Per Alex Smith of Yahoo Sports, Boone added that Gil will undergo further evaluations and get additional opinions, but he believes that the 26-year-old is “in the right frame of mind to go attack it and try to get right."

Yankees Call Up 6'7" Prospect 📈
The reigning American League Rookie of the Year, Gil was a dominant force for the Yankees in his first full year of major-league action. He made 29 starts and went 15-7 with a 3.50 ERA, a 1.19 WHIP and 171 strikeouts in 151.2 innings of work.
Unfortunately, Gil felt discomfort recently and cut a bullpen session short on Friday. The team scheduled him to undergo an MRI on Saturday, which revealed the severity of his injury.
This isn't the first time that Gil suffered a significant setback. He was forced to undergo Tommy John surgery that cost him most of the 2022 season and the entirety of the 2023 campaign.
Gil's absence likely will open a spot in the starting rotation for veteran Marcus Stroman, who was previously on the outside looking in as the sixth starter behind Gil, Gerrit Cole, Max Fried, Carlos Rodón and Clarke Schmidt. New York's depth should keep the team afloat until the young hurler is ready to return to the mound.
