Manchester United Out of 2025 FA Cup after Loss to Fulham; Full Quarter-Final Draw
Manchester United's season from hell continued on Sunday.
The FA Cup holders were knocked out of the competition in the fifth round on penalties against Fulham, leaving them with an extremely slim chance at securing any hardware in the 2024-25 campaign outside of the Europa League.
With United's loss, the FA Cup quarters are nearly set: Fulham will take on Crystal Palace, Preston North End will face Aston Villa, Bournemouth drew Manchester City and Brighton will take on Monday's winner between Nottingham Forest and Ipswich Town.
As for United, its supporters were left with a familiar feeling of disappointment. Manager Erik ten Hag was sacked in October in favor of Rúben Amorim and the change hasn't resulted in much optimism—the Red Devils currently sit 14th on the Premier League table with 33 points, a stunning run of mediocrity from a club of its size and resources.
In the EFL Cup, United were eliminated by Tottenham in the quarterfinals. They lost the Community Shield on penalties against Manchester City. At this point, the club's only chance at hardware this season is in the Europa League, with the first leg of its Round of 16 showdown against La Liga's Real Sociedad on Thursday.
"Our long term goal is to win the Premier League," United manager Rúben Amorim told BBC Sport after the loss (h/t Fabrizio Romano). "I don't know how long it is going to take but that's our goal. No matter what we continue forward."
At this point, it feels like a long-term goal that may take very long to come to fruition.
