Video: Alex Bregman Gets No. 2 Red Sox Jersey After $120M Contract in MLB Free Agency

Alex Bregman might be playing on a new team for the first time in his MLB career, but his uniform number is staying the same.

Bregman donned a No. 2 jersey during his introductory press conference with the Boston Red Sox on Sunday:

The Red Sox signed the two-time All-Star to a three-year contract worth $120 million.

Bregman wore No. 2 for the entirety of his nine-year run with the Houston Astros, which is in part a reference to the fact he was the second overall pick in the 2015 MLB draft. Like many of his generation, he also idolized New York Yankees legend Derek Jeter, perhaps the most famous MLB player to don No. 2.

As a member of the Sox, Bregman joins Xander Bogaerts, Jacoby Ellsbury and Jerry Remy among others in picking that number.

If everything goes according to plan for the 30-year-old, he may not be wearing that jersey in Boston for too long.

Bregman reportedly turned down more total money from the Detroit Tigers in order to get a higher average salary from the Red Sox. He sacrificed long-term security for short-term flexibility as well since he can opt out as early as next winter.

Blake Snell took a similar contract from the San Francisco Giants, signing for two years and $62 million with an opt-out ahead of the 2024 season. He parlayed his strong performance in the Bay Area into a $182 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Bregman isn't getting any younger and his production at the plate left something to be desired for a player with his pedigree. He had a .260/.315/.453 slash line, and his OPS+ (118) had declined for the second straight year.

Should the veteran infielder bounce back on offense and display some defensive versatility, he could reasonably command more than the $80 million he stands to earn for 2026 and 2027 under his current deal.
