2025 NHL 4 Nations Face-Off Predictions
Canada's defense gels against Finland
A tournament-ending injury to Shea Theodore in Wednesday's Face-Off opener. An illness that officially sidelined Cale Makar fewer than 30 minutes before Saturday's puck drop.
It's been a tough opening two games for Team Canada's defense, especially given that the unit wasn't allowed to practice with Thomas Harley ahead of Saturday's game.
Whether Makar returns from his illness in time for Monday's game against Finland, or Team Canada gets a chance to practice with the Harley-Drew Doughty pairing going forward, there should be a more cohesive defensive effort on display the next time the Canadians hit the ice.
That's good news for Team Canada. A regulation win Monday against Finland means a chance to take on Team USA for the title in Boston.
Team USA faces its toughest matchup yet
Even with Filip Gustavsson allowing two goals on four shots before leaving Saturday's game with an illness, Sweden came within inches of a game-winning goal in overtime before Finland found the back of the net first.
The Swedes will return, hopefully with more stability in net, alongside arguably the strongest defensive lineup in the tournament for Monday's game against Team USA.
So far the Americans have made easy work of Finland's defense and succeeded against Canadian blue line thinned by injury.
The Swedish defense, which features Victor Hedman, Erik Karlsson or Rasmus Dahlin always being on the ice at even strength, will present arguably the greatest test the American forwards have taken on yet.
That challenge could get even tougher if Matthew Tkachuk, who sat out most of the third period against Canada with an undisclosed injury, is unable to return by Monday.
If the American offense struggles enough to allow a regulation loss, a Canadian loss to Finland would mean Sweden can head to the championship game.
The 2025 4 Nations Face-Off resumes Monday at 1 p.m. ET.
