'It's a Dream Come True': Matthew Tkachuk Can't Wait to Take the Ice for Team USA

Joe YerdonFeb 13, 2025

When you think about what the past few years have been like for Florida Panthers star Matthew Tkachuk, one of the best ways to describe it would be "surreal."

Consider the following: A blockbuster trade in August 2023 sent him from the Calgary Flames to the Florida Panthers. The tenacious, feisty and chirpy winger brought his unique brand of hockey to South Florida, leading to back-to-back Stanley Cup Final appearances and a Cup win in June.

Days after winning the Cup, Tkachuk was one of the first six players named to the United States roster for the first-ever Four Nations Face-Off, the first tournament since the 2016 World Cup of Hockey to feature the NHL's best players going against each other.

All of this success would make just about anyone's head spin, but being one of the leaders for Team USA at the 4 Nations Face-Off puts things in a different light. The 27-year-old winger will be one of the alternate captains for Team USA as they take to the ice on Thursday night for the first time against Panthers teammate Aleksander Barkov and Finland.

It's another notable career moment for Tkachuk, who's also a BodyArmor sports drink ambassador. (In case you wondering, his favorite flavor from the NHL's official sports drink is fruit punch). He might be the guy who drives opponents bonkers across the league, but he's become one of the faces of the NHL.

"When I got that call [from Body Armor], it was very exciting," Tkachuk said. "Just to hear and see the names of all the guys that were involved (McDavid, Jalen Brunson, Trae Young, Bryce Young, Joe Burrow), it made it just that much cooler."

The rise in talent among American players has been astronomical over the past 10 years. Tkachuk is part of a group that features the likes of Auston Matthews, Jack Eichel, Jack Hughes and Adam Fox. He and his new teammates for the next few days are thrilled to wear a USA sweater and to face off against club teammates for the ultimate bragging rights.

"I think it's such a great time for hockey and the league, and the players are in such a great spot with the skill and everything," Tkachuk said in an exclusive interview with Bleacher Report. "There's so many great players, and there just hasn't been [involved] with best-on-best [hockey] yet. I've been just so fired up for that, and obviously the Olympics [in 2026] as well. I just can't wait to represent my country, wearing the USA jersey and the colors. There's no other feeling like it, and it's something I haven't done since World Juniors (in 2016)."

Tournaments like this help turn teammates into enemies and vice versa, but for Matthew, getting to team up with his brother Brady Tkachuk from the Ottawa Senators gave them the opportunity of a lifetime and the chance to step into their father Keith's shoes on the international stage. For opposing teams, lining up against either Tkachuk brother will be a nightmare considering their traits of being in your face, physical and ridiculously skillful.

Matthew has recorded 57 points in 52 games this season, while Brady has posted 44 in 56 contests.

"We've been talking about it so much leading into it…we are so excited," Tkachuk said. "To represent our country on the biggest stage and be able to play together, you can't make it up. It’s a dream come true."

With how successful the Panthers have been, they're well represented on all four teams. Sam Reinhart suits up for Canada, Gustav Forsling skates for Sweden, and Florida captain Barkov is also Finland's captain. Tkachuk has gone against all of them before during his career, but in this kind of setup, dealing with a player the caliber of Barkov creates a challenge regardless of how well he knows him.

"We both have so much pride in our respective countries and will do whatever it takes to win, and if that's playing extra hard against each other when we're best friends and teammates for the season and we have to take a few weeks off and play hard against each other, that's how it's going to be. We're both very prideful, and we'll both do anything to win."
