Windhorst: Joel Embiid's 76ers Contract 'Not Tradeable Right Now' amid Injury Woes
Joel Embiid is just two seasons removed from winning NBA MVP honors, but the Philadelphia 76ers star's recent injuries have made him far from a player of tremendous value.
According to ESPN's Brian Windhorst, Embiid's injuries combined with his three-year, $192.9 million contract extension mean that the 76ers couldn't even trade him if they wanted to.
"He's not tradeable right now," Windhorst said on Get Up on Tuesday (9:50 mark). "That contract makes his value not realistic. And just on Friday, Daryl Morey coming out of the trade deadline still reaffirmed 'We think he's a top-five player. We don't regret signing Paul George.'
"The future going forward is around Joel Embiid, so he's double, triple, quadruple down on it. And he really has to because that contract makes it impossible. They have to figure out a way to get him right. Trust me, they're trying. They are seeking all kinds of alternatives trying to make it happen."
Embiid, 30, has played just 16 games this year, putting up 24.8 points, 8.3 rebounds and a block per game. According to ESPN's Lisa Salters, Embiid said that repairing the knee that has forced him to miss so much time "will likely take another surgery and a long recovery period, something he didn't have after the initial injury last February."
Another surgery for Embiid would likely mean his trade value would take a bigger hit, and the 76ers would almost certainly ride it out with the big man to the end of his contract.
