LeBron Told Luka 'Be Your F--king Self' as Lakers Star Was 'Nervous' Before Jazz Win
Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James offered some succinct advice to new teammate Luka Dončić ahead of his debut Monday night against the Utah Jazz.
James told the five-time All-Star to "be your f--king self" and "don't fit in, fit the f--k out" (via ESPN's Dave McMenamin).
Dončić relayed after the Lakers' 132-113 victory that "it was chills" once LeBron gave his motivational speech.
"I was a little bit nervous before," he said. "I don't remember the last time I was nervous before the game. But once I stepped on the court, it was fun. And just being out there again felt amazing."
On social media, Dončić uploaded a video recapping the frenzied reaction toward his blockbuster trade to Los Angeles:
The 6'6" guard didn't deliver a great performance Monday. He shot 5-of-14 from the floor and 1-of-7 from beyond the arc en route to scoring 14 points, adding five rebounds and four assists to the stat sheet.
In terms of a midseason debut for a new team, though, Dončić showed some promising signs. The playmaking in particular stood out as he already looks to be building a rapport with the other Lakers players.
All five of Los Angeles' starters scored in double figures, while guard Jordan Goodwin came off the bench to drop 17 points. James had a game-high 24 points along with seven rebounds and eight assists, and guard Austin Reaves narrowly missed out on a double-double (22 points, nine rebounds).
The Lakers only have one more game before the All-Star break, a rematch with the Jazz on Wednesday in Salt Lake City. Assuming both Dončić and James play, it will be an opportunity for them to keep working on their on-court chemistry as they look to the second half of the year.
