New York Yankees at Los Angeles Angels Live Blog: Instant Analysis and Reaction

Aaron BrandJul 1, 2015

Coming into Wednesday night’s series finale with the Angels, Yankees’ starter Nate Eovaldi had a 4.81 ERA, but had recorded back-to-back quality starts. He fell short of his third straight, but pitched effectively enough to get the win.

The Yankees scored the game’s first three runs, with a RBI single by Chase Headley in the third, a solo home run by Garrett Jones in the sixth and a RBI bloop single by Didi Gregorius in the eighth. The Angels avoided the shutout when Mike Trout lasered his 21st home run out to right center field with two outs in the eighth, but mostly, the Angels’ offense was punchless.

Los Angeles came up with just six hits, including just one in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings. The Angels had their best chance in the sixth, after a leadoff single and then back-to-back walks loaded the bases with just one out.

The second walk chased starter Nate Eovaldi after 5.1 shutout innings in which he allowed five hits and three walks while striking out three. Reliever Chasen Shreve came out and picked up the final two outs of the inning. The third out of the inning came on a grounder to third in which Headley’s throw to first one-hopped Mark Teixeira, who made a great play to dig it out and save multiple runs.

After Trout’s home run in the eighth, the Yankees brought in closer Dellin Betances for a four-out save. Betances made things interesting, walking two in the ninth, before striking out CJ Cron to end it.

The Yankees improved to 42-37, including a 41-0 record when leading after eight innings. The Angels, who won the series, dropped to 41-38 on the year.
