Gonzalo Jara Banned 3 Matches: Latest Details, Comments and Reaction

Rory MarsdenJun 28, 2015

Chile's Gonzalo Jara will miss the rest of the 2015 Copa America after he picked up a three-match ban for using his finger to poke Edinson Cavani in the backside.

The incident took place as Chile took on Uruguay in the quarter-finals of the Copa on Thursday, with the official sending off Paris Saint-Germain's Cavani for his reaction, when he seemed to slap Jara.

Jara went unpunished during the match, but he has now been banned for three matches, as reported by beIN Sports USA on Sunday:

Copa America confirmed he was found guilty of unsportsmanlike conduct and fined $7,500.

The ramifications could be even further reaching for the defender after his club, Mainz, threatened to sell him because of the incident, per MailOnline Sport:

Chile will now be without Jara for their Monday semi-final with Peru and a potential Copa final after they beat Uruguay 1-0.

The other semi-final in the Chile tournament sees Argentina take on Paraguay as the host nation attempt to win a first Copa America.

Jara's transgression has somewhat overshadowed Chile's progress, but they are very much in with a shout of triumph at the tournament, although the 29-year-old will play no further part.
