Ecuador 2, Mexico 1
Ecuador caught Mexico flat-footed, with their first chance coming in the second minute. Beautiful ball movement led to a chance for Miller Bolanos, who shrugged past a defender and sent a low shot that was saved by Jose Corona's legs. Ecuador's high pressure sent Mexico's attempted offensive moves into shambles. ESPN FC's Tom Marshall weighed in on the action:
While Corona was busy with a pair of saves in the game's opening minutes, Mexico managed to absorb the Ecuadorian pressure and stabilize. Matias Vuoso saw a chance go inches wide for El Tri in the 23rd minute, letting Ecuador off the hook.
Ecuador took full advantage just minutes later. A poor clearance from Mexico came out to an Ecuador player, who moved the ball inside the box via striker Enner Valencia, and his shot was deflected straight into Bolanos' path. Cannoning a shot into the top of the net, Ecuador had the lead in the 26th minute. Via Twitter, beIN Sports questioned this critical goal's impact on Mexico's overall tournament success:
Their lead was doubled in the 57th minute through Valencia after a turnover. The assist came from Bolanos, as the two were combining well all evening.
Mexico found hope in a corner in the 63rd minute, when Gabriel Achilier committed a foul on Ayala in the box for a penalty. Raul Jimenez stepped up and converted the penalty to make it 2-1.
It was Ecuador, though, who were doing much of the attacking after Jimenez's goal, as Mexico needed a win for any hopes of qualifying for the next round. Instead, they became the first team of the tournament eliminated, as Ecuador will wait to see if they are one of the top two, third-place teams that will advance to the next round.
Chile 5, Bolivia 0
Bolivia were trying to keep their improbable run to the top of Group A alive, but it was not to be as they were thumped 5-0 by Chile.
Charles Aranguiz put the hosts ahead after a long ball into the box was brought down by Eduardo Vargas and left back for Aranguiz to finish in the back of the net.
Arsenal's Alexis Sanchez came within inches of doubling Chile's lead, but his free-kick rang off the post in the 19th minute. Chile kept the pressure on, as sportswriter Miguel Delaney noted the constant pressure being heaped on Bolivia's inexperienced side:
In the 31st minute, it was deja vu for the Chilean striker as another of his free-kicks hit the post.
Six minutes later, he was rewarded for his efforts, heading home a cross in spectacular, diving style to put Chile up 2-0.

The hosts withstood early Bolivian pressure in the second half and struck back in overwhelming style. Aranguiz picked up his second goal of the game in the 66th minute after the official allowed play to continue, giving Chile the advantage to develop their attack.
Gary Medel, a center-back, scored Chile's third goal after chesting down a cross and chipping the onrushing Romel Quinonez in the 79th minute to make it four. An own goal from Ronald Raldes sunk Bolivia even further seven minutes after Medel's goal. Both teams will move onto the quarter-finals, but Chile will stay in Santiago as Group A winners.
