Brazil vs. Uruguay
As two powerhouses of South American football, Brazil and Uruguay have had somewhat differing tournaments thus far in New Zealand.
While the Brazilians have faced challenging opponents in their group—particularly Nigeria and Hungary—they still managed to pick up nine points with three wins.
Uruguay, on the other hand, only scraped their way to second in a tight Group D, scoring just three goals as they drew with Mali, lost to Mexico and beat Serbia.
Brazil are heavy favourites to advance to the last eight from Thursday's match in New Plymouth, their goalscoring threat being significantly more dangerous than that of their opponents at the Stadium Taranaki.
The tactics from Uruguay will surely be to pack the midfield and try to frustrate the Brazilians in attack in the hope that they can snatch a goal on the counter.
However, Brazil should have enough to overcome their South American neighbours—especially if exciting Cruzeiro striker Judivan can find his shooting boots, having netted a double against Nigeria.
Germany vs. Nigeria
Much like their senior counterparts in both the men's and women's game, the German U20s are one of the best teams in the world at their level.
They are the favourites to win the tournament in New Zealand and breezed through their group, scoring 16 goals and conceding twice as they picked up three convincing victories.
As can be seen from the highlights of their 3-0 victory over Uzbekistan, they are very threatening in attack and play attractive, passing football:
Nigeria pose a significant threat, having performed well against Brazil in their opening group match, leading 2-1 before going down 4-2.
There is an interesting subplot to Thursday's clash in Christchurch, with German captain Kevin Akpoguma being half-Nigerian. He is clearly raring to go, per FIFA.com:
"I’m half-Nigerian as my father is Nigerian, and I’m glad to be able to say that. This match is already a special one for me; my parents are here and Thursday will be even more memorable for my Dad. Although he’ll have both his Germany and Nigeria flags at the ready for when the national anthems are played, in the end he’ll just be happy if his son gets to the next round.
"
Centre-back Akpoguma has already proved himself to be a fine leader in this competition, and he is surrounded by excellent players.
His team should move on to the quarter-finals on Thursday and have the aim of winning the whole thing firmly in their minds, as they certainly have the quality.
