Hosts Eager for a Good Showing

Canada's last foray into a World Cup ended in abject disaster.

In 2011, the Canadians managed just one goal in their three group games as they finished last in the tournament.

As hosts and with a new manager in charge, Canada will be eager to banish the bad memories of the last World Cup and qualify for the knockout stages.

John Herdman led Canada to Olympic bronze in 2012.

Their group, which also includes New Zealand and the Netherlands, gives them an excellent chance to do so.

Coach John Herdman has successfully revitalised the team after their fateful World Cup in 2011 and guided them to an Olympic bronze medal at London 2012.

According to the Canadian Press (h/t CBC Sports), Herdman credits talismanic captain Christine Sinclair's leadership skills as a key factor in the team's turnaround. He said:

"

I think often the best leaders, they don't say much but when they speak, people listen.

...

It came right down to this group of women had never been vulnerable enough to promote a layer of connection where people could trust them.

...

And when everyone's vulnerable, then you get a reality and a connection and an authenticity in your group.

And Christine made herself vulnerable in front of the group for the first time in her whole career.

"

Sinclair is an iconic player for Canada. Nominated seven times for World Player of the Year, she is the third all-time leading goalscorer in the world and is undoubtedly Canada's main threat.

So long as she remains fit, her side will stand an excellent chance of triumphing both against China and in making it out of the group.

Opponents China once graced the World Cup final back in 1999, where they ultimately lost on penalties to the U.S. in a dramatic shootout.

The team have struggled to replicate that success in the years since, but thanks to the management of Hao Wei, China have a youthful optimism surrounding their camp.

China boast 11 players under the age of 24 in their squad and none over 26.

Their focus on long-term development and success is admirable, but this World Cup is likely to be treated as a testing ground to further bed in the younger players ahead of tournaments yet to come.

Canada's physical, athletic play led from the front by Sinclair will likely prove too much for the Chinese, particularly as the match wears on and fitness and experience come into play. A winning start awaits the hosts when they kick off Group A.

Prediction: Canada 2-0
