Neymar, Barcelona Sued by Santos over Unpaid Fees: Latest Details, Reaction

Brazilian club Santos have filed a lawsuit against Spanish powerhouse Barcelona and star forward Neymar in regard to alleged unpaid compensation from the player's transfer in 2013.

Football Espana passed along comments from Santos president Modesto Roma Jr. about the situation. He confirmed legal action has been taken but didn't want the situation to get viewed as a personal attack against the Brazil international.

"This is not a lawsuit against a club idol [in Neymar], but rather in favor of Santos," Roma said. "We could not remain silent in this matter. We respect all the parties, but we need to recover the damage caused to the club."

The issue has also been brought to FIFA's attention. Overall compensation is listed in the report at a staggering €86.2 million, and Santos have decided to use the legal system to recover its remaining portion of the agreement.

"On Sunday, May 31, it will be two years since the transfer of Neymar's registration rights, whereby Santos received €17.1 million, plus a conditional €2 million, from Barcelona," Roma said. "Santos aim to receive compensation and will use all legal means to protect their rights."

Football Espana notes Neymar Sports, a company involving the superstar, and the player's father are also part of the legal situation.

It's unclear what the next step in the process will be. There's obviously a large difference between what Santos believe they are owed and the original payment to secure Neymar's move to Barca, where he's enjoyed two successful campaigns.

If nothing else, it shows high-profile transfers sometimes aren't as clear-cut as they may seem.
