Rodgers Stays On as Liverpool Manager
Tuesday, June 2
"Brendan Rodgers will stay as Liverpool manager after meeting with Tom Werner. All parties agreed improvements must be made," wrote Ben Smith of BBC Sport.
Liverpool struggled to replicate the heights of the 2013-14 season when they narrowly missed out on the Premier League title. The Reds also missed out on a Champions League spot before ending the campaign with a dismal drubbing by Stoke, leaving Rodgers under pressure.
"The 42-year-old had been under pressure after a dismal end to the season that culminated in a 6-1 loss at Stoke City, Liverpool’s heaviest defeat in 52 years, no silverware for the third year of his reign and failure to qualify for the Champions League, despite a £117m investment in new players," wrote Andy Hunter of The Guardian. "However, having met the two members of the Anfield hierarchy who are leading a wide-ranging review into what went wrong in 2014-15, Rodgers has been assured his position is safe and that he remains FSG’s man going into next season."
Ancelotti Reportedly Approached by Liverpool
Wednesday, May 27
Jose Felix Diaz of Marca reported that former Real Madrid manager Ancelotti was recently sounded out by Liverpool. Diaz noted that Ancelotti had planned on taking a year-long sabbatical after his departure from the Bernabeu, but the Reds "may be the only club capable of changing his mind."
Liverpool's 6-1 loss to Stoke was the club’s heaviest defeat since a 7-2 drubbing by Tottenham in 1963, per Bascombe, and saw the north London club move above the Reds into fifth place.
After the game, Rodgers confirmed he would be prepared to leave his role at Anfield if the owners decided to sack him. “I’ve always said if the owners want me to go, then I go. For everybody connected with Liverpool, we are all embarrassed by that result," Rodgers said, per the BBC.
After leading Liverpool to second place in the Premier League and within a whisker of the title 12 months ago, and a return to the Champions League, the team have gone backwards this season.
Liverpool failed to progress beyond the group phase in the Champions League before losing to Besiktas on penalties in the Europa League. Liverpool also lost to Aston Villa in the FA Cup semi-finals before limping to the end of the season and a sixth-place finish.
A decision on Rodgers’ future shouldn’t be based on just the Stoke hammering. He has shown he can turn Liverpool into challengers on the back of a poor season once already, and that likely worked in his favour.
