La Liga Table 2015: Final Standings Following Matchday 38 Results

Gianni VerschuerenMay 23, 2015

The 2014-15 La Liga season came to a conclusion on Saturday, and Matchday 38 threw up a handful of surprises as the final standings were set in stone. Deportivo La Coruna completed a fantastic comeback against Barcelona to salvage their La Liga spot for next season, while Real Madrid played out a thrilling 7-3 win over Getafe.

Eibar managed to beat Cordoba 3-0 but will still be relegated following Deportivo La Coruna's 2-2 draw against the champions and Granada's scoreless draw against Atletico Madrid.

Valencia beat Almeria 3-2 to grab the final Champions League ticket ahead of Sevilla, who could still qualify for the tournament by beating Dnipro in the Europa League final. Here are the full results from Week 38:

Barcelona legend Xavi took centre stage in Week 38, saying goodbye to the Blaugrana after spending his entire career at the club. As shared by Barcastuff, the veteran couldn't hold back his tears when the team honoured him with a tribute video:

He later explained why he became so emotional:

Lionel Messi gave Barcelona a 2-0 lead over Deportivo after 60 minutes, and the Galicians appeared to be on their way down to the Segunda Division with just half an hour left on the clock.

But the club produced a fantastic comeback and pulled level thanks to goals from Lucas Perez and Diogo Salomao—to the disbelief of football journalist Graham Ruthven:

The draw was enough to keep the club in La Liga, as Deportivo and Granada, who both finished equal on points with Eibar, held the advantage in the head-to-head tie-breaker.

Eibar were one of the most pleasant surprises of the first half of the campaign, but the minnows were absolutely dreadful in 2015, and even a late win over Cordoba couldn't save them, per David Cartlidge of BeIN Sports:

As Inside La Liga shared, manager Gaizka Garitano confirmed he will be stepping down following his inability to keep the club in La Liga:

Cristiano Ronaldo scored a first-half hat-trick against Getafe in Real Madrid's 7-3 win, a fitting conclusion to Los Blancos' season. Real scored almost at will but went into half-time tied 3-3 with a team that looked far inferior on paper, once again underlining the defensive issues that have plagued the team.

Martin Odegaard made his debut for the hosts, and per FootballEspana, the 16-year-old became the youngest La Liga player in history to do so:

Valencia finished their match against Almeria with 10 men after Daniel Parejo was dismissed for a second bookable offence, but a late goal from Paco Alcacer still gave the team a 3-2 win and the final Champions League ticket ahead of Sevilla, per Cartlidge:

The team has spent the entire campaign making life difficult on itself, and Saturday's match was no different. Sevilla took a convincing 3-2 lead against Malaga and appeared to be on the cusp of knocking their rivals out of the top four, but Alcacer came to Valencia's rescue.

Sevilla and Villarreal have qualified for next year's Europa League, although the former could still make the Champions League by beating Dnipro in their final match of the season.

Athletic Bilbao prepared for their meeting with Barcelona in the Copa Del Rey with a comprehensive 4-0 win over the Yellow Submarine. The two clubs will meet on Saturday, May 30.
