Premier League Week 38 Fixtures: EPL TV Schedule, Live Stream and Predictions

Matt JonesMay 23, 2015

All eyes will be on the bottom of the Premier League table as the final round of fixtures plays out, with Hull City and Newcastle United battling to avoid the drop.

Hull simply must win if they’re to preserve their top-flight status for next season, and they will face a difficult challenge at home to Manchester United. The Tigers could still be relegated even if they were to pick up three points, though; Newcastle can confirm their place in the Premier League for next season with a win at home against West Ham United.

Bleacher Report’s Sam Tighe made his predictions for the final round of fixtures:

Newcastle United vs. West Ham United

It’s remarkable that Newcastle are even in this precarious position. The Magpies have lost nine and drawn one of their last 10 games, have a completely disillusioned fanbase and, at the moment, it’s tough to see where a win is going to come from.

There’s one source of comfort for this team, though: Going into the final day, John Carver’s men know that their chances of survival are in their own hands. But Sunderland’s draw at Arsenal plunged the Toon Army further into the mire.

West Ham don’t have much to play for, although you can bet their manager Sam Allardyce—who endured a tumultuous time as Newcastle boss—will be keen to make it a tense afternoon for the Geordies. But as we can see here, per the Hammers’ Twitter feed, Allardyce has insisted he’ll be focused on his own side come Sunday:

The Londoners were a little unlucky to lose to Everton last week and can still overhaul the Toffees to secure a top-10 finish. Against a moribund Newcastle outfit, they should be confident of notching all three points too.

It’ll be intriguing to see what kind of atmosphere will greet the home players this weekend. As we can see here, courtesy of BBC Sport, the supporters are planning a protest regardless of the result:

Most worryingly of all is just how poorly this team have been playing.

There’s been absolutely nothing to suggest they can bag a win here, with the club’s 2-1 surrender away at Queens Park Rangers last weekend about as bad as it gets. As such, the Hammers will bag all three points, giving Hull a massive chance to haul themselves out of trouble.

Prediction: Newcastle 1-2 West Ham

Hull City vs. Manchester United

LONDON, ENGLAND - MAY 16: Tom Huddlestone (L) and Dame N'Doye (R) of Hull City show their dejections after conceding a goal during the Barclays Premier League match between Tottenham Hotspur and Hull City at White Hart Lane on May 16, 2015 in London, En

Hull City boss Steve Bruce has never steered any team to victory over his former club Manchester United during his managerial career, but he knows that only three points will do this time around.

It’s been a tough time for the Tigers. The loss to Burnley a couple of weeks ago really sapped this side’s momentum, and the defeat against Tottenham Hotspur last weekend now means they have a mountain to climb. As such, it’s going to take a massive turnaround in fortunes on the final day.

But as noted by OptaJoe, not only is Bruce’s record against the Red Devils poor, but so is the Tigers' history on the final day of the season:

As was evident by the videos of United’s end-of-season awards, everyone at the club seems to be in a pretty relaxed mood. It means they could be ideal opponents for Hull, especially given that barring a mathematical miracle, Louis van Gaal’s team will finish no higher than fourth place.

But as we can see here, courtesy of Opta (via Sky Sports News HQ), the Red Devils will surely be confident of finishing with a flourish against a team notorious for falling away in the final weeks of the season:

The KC Stadium should be bouncing for this encounter, and Bruce will be hoping the fans' influence gives his toiling troops a timely lift.

So far this campaign, Hull have actually performed pretty well against the more illustrious teams, and the fans will surely rally here given the occasion. It will be enough to see the Tigers avoid defeat, but they don’t have the quality to snatch the win they so desperately need.

Prediction: Hull 2-2 Manchester United
