EPL Table: Premier League Standings, Predictions Heading into Final Week

Rob BlanchetteMay 21, 2015

After a gruelling season for English football's top clubs, all that is left is for Chelsea to collect the silverware at their final EPL match—and for an epic battle at the bottom of the table to take place.

As Leicester City and Sunderland save themselves from the last-day jitters, Hull City and Newcastle United await to see if they will be in the Premier League next term.

Steve Bruce's Tigers face a Manchester United team with nothing to play for, with the Geordies hosting a West Ham side looking to finish in the top 10.

Newcastle to Fall at Final Hurdle

Newcastle are the living embodiment of the "sleeping giant" tag, but Saturday could become a nightmare as they potentially slip into an unwanted slumber.

The Geordies sit just two points above Hull—who occupy the final relegation berth—and the north-east club might easily find themselves as a Championship team come Sunday.

However, with Hull facing a Manchester United team who are guaranteed their goal of fourth place, John Carver's side face a West Ham outfit who might be deemed to already be on their summer holidays.

Darren Lewis of the Mirror reports Sam Allardyce has given his players time off before they face his former team, boosting the Geordies' chances of survival.

But with football always ready to throw up a surprise, the question is, are Newcastle good enough to save themselves with the pressure off the east London team?

The St James Club side have just one point to their name from their past 10 EPL games, per Squawka.com, and they look like a car without a steering wheel.

BBC Sport's Mark Lawrenson severely criticised Newcastle but thinks they will escape the drop:

"

Newcastle need to win to guarantee they will stay up. I don't see that happening but I think they will stay up because Hull won't beat Manchester United. Whether they beat the drop or not, I think people should look at the Magpies as an example of how not to run a football club.

"

Carver has failed in his short time as manager—following the exit of Alan Pardew to Crystal Palace—and the players clearly do not connect with the coach on any level.

On the flip side of the coin, Bruce appears to have a good rapport with the talent in his side, but Hull are the perennial underachievers, despite investing heavily in their squad this year.

But the scalp of United is always a prized trophy, so it will be no surprise if they raise their game and defeat Louis van Gaal's team.

Greatest of Escapes for Hull

Manchester United will be satisfied with their season's work, even if they fall to defeat against Hull at the KC Stadium.

The Red Devils were impressive in their final home match of the season against Arsenal, but they have stalled in terms of consistency at the end of the campaign.

As a result, Van Gaal has nothing to play for and Bruce has everything to gain—against the side were he became a club legend.

At home, Hull are a different team to the one that travels around the country to away games, and they will be disappointed if they cannot accrue the points needed to leapfrog Newcastle, especially after recently falling to Burnley.

Three straight losses has left them languishing in 18th place, and their EPL visit could now be over.

But with Newcastle's result out of the Tigers' hands, they can play their best football and hope for lady luck to help them. The Geordies have not won in the EPL since February, so a win against West Ham will be difficult to navigate, especially since Allardyce teams have a strong defensive resolve.

This could be yet another dramatic last day in the Premier League, and one of the country's biggest clubs could find itself in the unlikely position of the bottom three. However, Bruce first needs some luck and must hope Newcastle continue their incredible slide to misfortune.
