Hummels Staying at Dortmund
Wednesday, May 20
Citing an early version of Thursday's Kicker cover, football writer Raphael Honigstein notes Hummels plans to stay with the German power:
Hummels was expected to be one of the highest-profile names available on the transfer market this summer. United had a longstanding £21.5 million offer on the table for Hummels, but talks began to slow down when manager Jurgen Klopp confirmed his exit after the season. There had been some reports even dating back to 2014 indicating United were ready to make a heavy push for Hummels.
The 26-year-old centre-back has been with Dortmund since 2009. He's emerged as one of Bundesliga's best all-around players and a mainstay on the German national team. His decision to continue playing in his home country will be a massive boost to Dortmund, who are in for an uncertain summer following Klopp's exit.
Hummels' decision to stick around will help ease the transition. As for United, they will have to go back to the drawing board as they attempt to unseat Chelsea atop the Premier League table. Odds are they'll still add an influx of talent, but it's a disconcerting sign one of their top targets is already off the board.
