Liverpool Lurch to Collect Fifth-Place Finish
After the second-place finish of last season, hopes on Merseyside were so high that Liverpool would be capable of an assault on the title this term, but reality hasn't been so kind to Brendan Rodgers and his troops.
Travelling to the Britannia Stadium on the final day of the season isn't a fate many top-flight sides would wish for, especially for Liverpool, who have won just one of their six Premier League trips to face Stoke City.

With just a point separating Liverpool, fifth, from Tottenham Hotspur in sixth, the Reds need to end with a flourish if they're to seal a place in next term's Europa League, but defeat could see them finish as low as seventh.
Some see Europe's second-tier competition as doing more harm than good for a club that feels it should be in the Champions League, but the Liverpool Echo's Kristian Walsh notes a sixth-place finish could mean an extremely busy summer:
That's because sixth would only be enough for a place in the competition's third qualifying round, an extra workload the club would undoubtedly rather go without as they prepare for 2015-16.
Encouragingly for Rodgers, that one Britannia victory did come in the club's most recent trip to Stoke—a 5-3 win in January 2014—but Mark Hughes' side nevertheless make for a daunting host against which to end a campaign.
| January 12, 2014 | Stoke City | 3-5 | Liverpool |
| December 26, 2012 | Stoke City | 3-1 | Liverpool |
| September 10, 2011 | Stoke City | 1-0 | Liverpool |
| November 13, 2010 | Stoke City | 2-0 | Liverpool |
| January 16, 2010 | Stoke City | 1-1 | Liverpool |
| January 10, 2009 | Stoke City | 0-0 | Liverpool |
What's more, Spurs and Southampton face tough trips of their own to Everton and Manchester respectively, and it may be only too plausible that none of the three travelling teams win on the final day.
The Toffees have lost just three of the last 10 games across all competitions, and Manchester City showed during a hard-fought 2-1 win over Swansea City that they remain a power to be reckoned with.
It's slightly fortunate for the Reds that a draw against the Potters could be enough to steal fifth. It's not the finish they were seeking nine months ago, but it's the best they can hope for after such a long and arduous season of immense change.
No Change In Race Against Relegation

Burnley and Queens Park Rangers have already sealed their places as two of the three relegated parties this season, with Hull City currently sitting in 18th and two points from safety coming into Week 38.
As Sky Sports attests, not only would the Tigers need to win their first-ever Premier League fixture in the month of May to secure survival, but they'd have to do so against Manchester United:
The KC Stadium hosts the Red Devils on Sunday, knowing even three points may not be enough, with Hull needing Newcastle United to lose to West Ham United and Sunderland to lose at Chelsea.
Stoke forward Jonathan Walters told Match of the Day he doesn't think a Manchester United win is as assured as some might suppose, however, taking heed of Hull's home threat:
All things considered, though, it doesn't look good for Steve Bruce's men. Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal will be hopeful of signing off his first season at Old Trafford with style, and Hull's record of three losses on the bounce makes for poor reading.
Whether it comes by small margin or large, it seems only too likely Hull City will suffer defeat at the hands of United and confirm their demise, regardless of how Sunderland and Newcastle United fare.
