EPL Table: Latest Week 37 Results, Scores and 2015 Premier League Standings

Gianni VerschuerenMay 16, 2015

Manchester United and Arsenal shared the spoils during Sunday's Week 37 Premier League action, playing out a 1-1 draw which means little movement in the standings. Following Manchester City's 2-4 win over Swansea City, the finishing positions inside the top four look all but set.

Chelsea's 3-0 defeat to West Bromwich Albion on Monday evening showed that shocks are still afoot in the Premier League rat race, however, as the Blues were complacent in the wake of their title glory.

Steven Gerrard's Anfield farewell didn't produce the storybook ending fans will have hoped, as Crystal Palace managed to beat Liverpool 3-1 on Saturday. The result means the Reds can no longer qualify for the Champions League play-off.

Monday Recap

Just the one Premier League fixture on Monday evening might have made for a slow news day, but West Brom and Chelsea ensured it was anything but as the Baggies romped to a 3-0 shock victory at the Hawthorns.

Jose Mourinho will rue a missed chance to further cement his side's status as England's most dominant party, largely thanks to Cesc Fabregas' odd sending off after kicking the ball at Chris Brunt's head.

The incident occurred after Diego Costa and Jonas Olsson had a minor clash, after which Fabregas decided it would be wise to lob the ball into a group of players, hitting Brunt.

Julian De Martinis of ESPN FC saw the funny side of it all, but the point stands that Fabregas now misses his side's last fixture of the season against Sunderland on Sunday, along with the first two games of next term:

Mourinho assuredly won't have been as amused, but the advantage gave Saido Berahino the means to run riot, finishing his evening with two goals, with Brunt himself adding a third from distance.

John Cross of the Mirror was full of praise for Tony Pulis' live-wire, who's now looking more like the figure that caused such a stir after erupting onto the scene last season:

Although the Premier League crown is all wrapped up, Chelsea showed a complacency against West Brom that won't be seen as welcome by their boss.

West Brom, meanwhile, will take the result gleefully and acknowledge what a terrific result it is heading into their season closer against Arsenal on Sunday.

Sunday Recap

Sunday's match between Manchester United and Arsenal provided plenty of highlights and talking points, but ultimately, neither team was really good enough to win, as the two battled to a 1-1 draw. Ander Herrera scored the opening goal during a miserable first half of the Gunners, who equalised late in the second half thanks to an own goal from Tyler Blackett.

As shared by BBC Sport's Phil McNulty, it truly was a dreadful first-half performance from the Gunners:

Football 365's Daniel Storey isolated Alexis Sanchez as one of the most disappointing performers, likely noticing his struggles because he's been so great during his first Premier League season:

David de Gea left the pitch with an injury during the second half, and with question marks surrounding his future, one has to wonder whether the Old Trafford faithful will be seeing the Spanish stopper defend the net for United ever again.

Phil Jones also made the headlines for the type of header you only ever expect to see from Phil Jones, per Daniel Taylor of the Guardian:

Yaya Toure scored twice as Manchester City overcame Swansea City 4-2 on Sunday, but Manuel Pellegrini will not have been satisfied with his team's performance.

The Citizens gave up a 2-0 lead and looked more than just a little shaky defensively throughout the match, as shared by Storey:

James Milner and Toure had given the visitors a 2-0 lead before Gylfi Sigurdsson and Bafetimbi Gomis tied things up again, courtesy of some horrendous defending of last season's champions.

Toure's second put City back in front, before Wilfried Bony put the final score on the board by scoring against his former club.

Eliaquim Mangala was given the start in the heart of City's defence, and the results weren't pretty. Back to Storey:

The Frenchman's first season in the Premier League has been a disaster, but fortunately for Mangala, he's still only 24 years old. The Premier League isn't exactly a patient league, but he'll have the chance to show he was worth his gaudy transfer fee next season.

There was good news for fans of the club after the match, as manager Pellegrini confirmed City will enter talks with veteran midfielder Toure at the end of the campaign, per talkSPORT:

The Ivorian once again showed his importance on Sunday and remains one of the club's most important players, despite his age. Ensuring he'll still be playing in sky blue has to one of the top priorities for the summer.

That, and finding some consistency in a defensive unit that was a shadow of its former self all season long.

Saturday Recap

Former Manchester United star Wilfried Zaha spoiled the party for Gerrard and Liverpool, scoring seconds after coming on the pitch to give Crystal Palace a 3-1 win at Anfield. Adam Lallana had opened the score, but Jason Puncheon and Zaha ruined Gerrard's big farewell. Glenn Murray added insult to injury with a late penalty.

All eyes were, of course, on the captain, who played his final match at Anfield as a member of Liverpool. Before the match, fans went out of their way to thank the Reds legend, as shared by Bleacher Report UK:

The stadium announcer also got in on the act, although he was perhaps a bit overly careful with his wording:

Manager Brendan Rodgers gave high praise to the longtime Liverpool captain, telling the Liverpool Echo's James Pearce he foresees a career as a manager for Gerrard:

Once the match started, however, things didn't go as planned for Liverpool. The defence looked shaky at best, and while Lallana gave the hosts the lead in the first half, the one-goal advantage never looked particularly safe.

Puncheon's equaliser had fans dreaming of a late winner from Gerrard, but as shared by Bleacher Report UK, someone forgot to inform Zaha of this:

Murray made the score 3-1 late after missing a penalty, severely dampening the mood at Anfield.

Southampton and Tottenham both managed to win their Week 37 matches, meaning both clubs will still be battling for a Europa League ticket on the final matchday―although both could still qualify if Arsenal beat Aston Villa in the FA Cup final.

Nacer Chadli and Danny Rose scored for Spurs in what was hardly an inspiring match, and the latter made headlines for his interesting new haircut, via the Daily Telegraph's Matt Law:

Meanwhile, Saints made a mockery of Aston Villa, as Sadio Mane bagged a hat-trick and Shane Long added two more goals to Southampton's 6-1 win.

At the time, Villa were still not mathematically safe as Newcastle would play later in the day, and the only bright spot of their performance was Christian Benteke's goal, which saw him pass Romelu Lukaku as the top Belgian scorer in Premier League history.

As shared by HLN's Kristof Terreur, it didn't take long for Lukaku to catch his compatriot:

Lukaku scored the winner in Everton's 2-1 triumph over West Ham United, which saw the Toffees pass the Hammers in the standings thanks to a superior goal differential.

Newcastle were in dire need of a win over QPR, but the Magpies squandered a one-goal lead, leading to plenty of hilarity on social media. Bleacher Report UK joined in on the action:

Matthew Philips and Leroy Fer scored just minutes apart to give QPR the win and secure Villa's spot in next year's Premier League in the process:

Sunderland need just one point from their final two matches to avoid the drop, but they'll face difficult trips to Chelsea and Arsenal. Hull City have to beat Manchester United at home, while Newcastle will play West Ham on the final matchday.
