The Premier League title may already belong to Chelsea, and the Champions League spots may no longer be in contention, but there was plenty to play for in Matchday 37 for a number for teams.

Places and seedings in Europe were on the line, and of course, the relegation battle raged on, with five teams all trying to avoid the final relegation spot. Let's break down the updated table and the week's action.

SOUTHAMPTON, ENGLAND - MAY 16: Sadio Mane of Southampton celebrates scoring the opening goal during the Barclays Premier League match between Southampton and Aston Villa at St Mary's Stadium on May 16, 2015 in Southampton, England. (Photo by Bryn Lennon

Southampton opened Matchday 37 by absolutely thumping Aston Villa, 6-1, a loss that destroyed an already poor goal differential and almost made the last weekend a bit more interesting than Villa might have liked in regard to relegation.

The man of the hour was Sadio Mane, who set a bit of Premier League history on the day, per ESPN Stats & Information:

Yes, Mane scored three goals in an amazing two minutes and 56 seconds. Squawka Football has more on the achievement:

Robbie Fowler, clearly being bombarded with tweets after Mane's record-setting performance, responded with a tongue-in-cheek tweet of his own:

Southampton wasn't done there, however, as Shane Long had two first-half goals of his own, including a brilliant shot from distance after he stole the ball in the midfield, took a few dribbles upfield, saw Shay Given off his line and ripped a beautiful, curling, pinpoint shot past the outstretched arm of the keeper.

Were it not for Mane's record-breaking performance, Long's showing is the one we'd likely all be talking about. Just consider this stat, per OptaJoe on Twitter:

Not a bad shift, eh?

Christian Benteke would pull one back for Villa before the break, though Graziano Pelle would score the game's final goal in a wonderful bit of build-up play that would result in the Italian smashing a volley past Given.

The loss could have put Aston Villa in relegation danger, but Hull City's 2-0 loss to Tottenham guaranteed safety for the club. Leicester's scoreless draw against Sunderland also left them safe, while Everton secured a 2-1 win over West Ham as the Toffees look to close the season on a strong note.

Newcastle, on the other hand, kept themselves in the relegation thicket with a 2-1 loss to already-relegated Queens Park Rangers. They still have a two-point cushion heading into the weekend over Hull City—who face Manchester United next weekend—and are likely safe barring a surprising Hull City victory and either a loss or tie themselves, but the opportunity to guarantee safety on Saturday slipped them by.

That's surely a disappointment for the club that really should be much better than their current placement on the table.

Sunderland aren't safe either, though with a game in hand and a three-point cushion on Hull, it would be surprising if they dropped.

The most surprising result of the day came in an emotional match between Liverpool and Crystal Palace at Anfield. Most expected the Reds to send Steven Gerrard off on a winning note in his final home match, but they fell 3-1.

Following an Adam Lallana goal in the 26th minute, the Eagles proceeded to score three unanswered goals, including the eventual game winner by Wilfried Zaha in the 60th minute.

It was a hugely disappointing result for Liverpool fans, and as pointed out by Sachin Nakrani of The Guardian, it doesn't bode well for their future prospects without Gerrard:

In addition to that, the defeat cemented Liverpool's place outside the top four in the EPL standings, which means they will not be part of the Champions League.

A season that was full of promise never reached its full potential for the Reds, and Saturday's loss was a microcosm of that.

Manchester City opened Sunday's action with an impressive 4-2 win over Swansea City, as Yaya Toure posted a brace and Wilfried Bony scored against his former team. The win was a big step in City's quest to finish second on the table, and a draw next weekend will assure they secure third no matter what Arsenal do in their final two games based on goal differential, unless the Gunners score an obscene amount of goals in their final two games.

For Swansea, the loss ensured that they will miss out on European football next season.

The action concluded on Sunday with a 1-1 draw between Manchester United and Arsenal, a result that was perhaps a bit harsh on the home side, as United dominated the first half and Theo Walcott's equalizer was an attempted cross that took a deflection and shot past keeper Victor Valdes, who came on in relief for the injured David De Gea.

The draw was a favorable result for Arsenal in the end, as the team holds a two-point cushion on United with a game in hand. Second place now seems like a long shot for the Gunners, however.

The week concluded with West Brom's 3-0 victory over Chelsea in a game rendered utterly meaningless for the Blues since they've already clinched the Premier League title. The contest was meaningful for reasons far beyond the score sheet, however, as Cesc Fabregas was given a red card for kicking the ball at a West Brom's players during a break in the action and John Terry should have been sent off for a tackle from behind in a clear goal-scoring opportunity.

It was clearly the performance of a club that has put this season to bed, even with another game remaining.
