Europa League 2015 Results: Scores for Semi-Final Leg 2 Fixtures

Gianni VerschuerenMay 14, 2015

Sevilla and Dnipro will meet in the 2014-15 Europa League final on May 27 at the Stadion Narodowy in Warsaw, Poland, as they managed to beat Fiorentina and Napoli respectively in the return leg of their semi-final ties.

The La Liga outfit easily defended a 3-0 lead from the first leg, with Carlos Bacca and Daniel Carrico scoring first-half goals, while a controversial goal from Yevhen Seleznyov gave Dnipro a shock win over the Partenopei.

Here are the full results of the 2014-15 Europa League semi-final:

Napoli were expected to romp past Dnipro after last week's match in Italy, when the Partenopei dominated yet somehow only managed a draw. But Dnipro shocked the Partenopei by pushing forward aggressively early on Thursday, showing plenty of willingness to attack.

Gianlucadimarzio.com's David Amoyal was impressed:

The hosts couldn't muster a lot of chances in the first half, and Gonzalo Higuain should have given Napoli the lead on at least two occasions. The Argentina international hasn't enjoyed his finest campaign, and his struggles were evident on Thursday.

As shared by Squawka, he wasn't the only visitor who struggled:

Dnipro grew better as the first half went on and came out of the dressing room with renewed energy. They deservedly took the lead after one hour of play. In-form Seleznyov scored a powerful header that gave the hosts some insurance, knowing a Napoli goal would mean extra time and not a premature exit.

The Daily Mirror's Mina Rzouki feared for Napoli's chances of reaching the final:

Plenty of fans were upset the goal stood, as Seleznyov appeared to foul Raul Albiol—although the Napoli man appeared to grab his opponent just as much as vice versa. Spanish football blogger Rafael Hernandez still felt the call robbed the Partenopei:

Napoli pushed hard for a late winner but struggled to move the ball on a soaking wet pitch, and Dnipro managed to weather the storm and qualify for the final.

Fiorentina knew they had a big mountain to climb after the heavy 3-0 defeat in Sevilla, but the fans turned out in numbers and were very vocal early, showing they still believed La Viola could get the job done.

That belief lasted all of 22 minutes until Bacca opened the score for the visitors. Fox Soccer believed that was truly the end of Fiorentina's bid to make the final:

Five minutes later, the visitors' lead had doubled. Fiorentina's defence completely switched off, and Carrico was able to prod the ball home from close range.

Things went from bad to worse in the second half for La Viola. The hosts were given a lifeline when the official pointed to the spot after a foul inside the box, but Josip Ilicic failed to convert the penalty. Sevilla were happy to just count down the minutes until the final whistle, knowing their ticket for Warsaw was already in the bag.

Despite the loss, Joaquin told Mediaset he was still proud of what his club achieved, via Football Italia:

Neither Serie A side looked particularly impressive during the Europa League semi-finals, but Dnipro and Sevilla deserve full credit for qualifying. The Ukrainians have defied expectations round after round and showed plenty of grit against Napoli. Meanwhile, Sevilla remain among the best when it comes to playing in Europe and crushed Fiorentina over two legs.

Last year's winners will be strong favourites again when they meet Dnipro, knowing another Europa League win would hand the club a ticket into next year's Champions League. Dnipro have surprised plenty of pundits and have a solid squad, but they've done most of their damage on their home turf. Things will be a lot harder against the experienced Sevilla side on neutral ground.
