Wednesday Recap

Tottenham Hotspur finally got back to their winning ways, beating Fulham 2-0 thanks to goals from Christian Maghoma and Shayon Harrison. The result means Fulham will be relegated to Group 2 for the start of next season.

Maghoma scored his first ever U21 goal from a corner kick during the first half, and the club's official Twitter account shared his reaction to accomplishing that feat:

Fulham pressed heavily during the second half, desperately trying to avoid the drop, but Spurs easily held on for the winner and found a second goal in injury time, as Will Miller played Harrison in, allowing the substitute to finish in an open goal.

Meanwhile, Middlesbrough took a big step toward securing the Group 2 title with a 3-2 win over Aston Villa, as Andrew Jackson gave the hosts the win and a six-point lead at the top of the standings.

The club's official Twitter account shared the final score:

Everton's 2-1 win over West Ham means the Toffees are mathematically certain of Group 1 football next season, with the Hammers and Fulham going down to Group 2. Reading and Middlesbrough will be promoted to Group 1 next season.

Dominic Solanke was the star of the show for Chelsea’s youngsters, as his hat-trick in a thrilling 4-3 win over Liverpool kept the Blues’ title chances alive.

Victory for the Londoners gives them 34 points, three behind league leaders Manchester United with a game in hand. The Reds aren’t out of the running yet either, but they’re two points back on the league leaders having played a game more.

As noted here by Chelsea’s official Twitter account, assistant manager Andy Myers commented on the spirit his team showed:

It was the men from Merseyside who started this one on the front foot, and they got the goal their incisive early player deserved through Jerome Sinclair. But after that early strike, the young Chelsea stars came roaring back, as Solanke bagged a brace before Alex Kiwomya made it 3-1 prior to the break with an excellent goal.

To their credit, Liverpool kept themselves in this contest, and Cameron Brannagan halved the deficit with a neat finish early in the second half.

It was to be Solanke’s night, however. The young forward was on hand to capitalise on stunning interplay between Tammy Abraham and Jeremie Boga to make it a trio of strikes. Harry Wilson added a third for Liverpool with the clock ticking down, but it was too little, too late for the visitors, who are big outsiders for the league title now.

As noted here by ChelseaFansChannel, with virtuoso displays like this, Solanke must be getting close to some first-team appearances:

After lifting the FA Youth Cup for the fourth time in six years last month, there has been plenty of clamour about these Blues academy stars and, as he illustrated here, Solanke is the crown jewel of a stunning crop of burgeoning players.

The talent of these lads is beyond dispute, but a fortitude that bodes well for the future was on display here. Surely it’s only a matter of time before we see some of these bright young stars blooded in the Premier League.

Earlier on in the day, Bolton Wanderers picked up an important victory to move above local rivals Blackburn Rovers at the bottom of Group 2.

Encouragingly for Rovers, club captain Grant Hanley played 63 minutes in this encounter as he continues his recovery from injury. It was the only bright spot during a disappointing afternoon for the hosts, however, as a late Jamie Thomas penalty gave Bolton three points.

Division 2 was centre stage on Tuesday evening as Newcastle United's youngsters offered some light relief to the failing St James' Park club.

The young Geordies defeated Blackburn Rovers, 4-2, and now find themselves in fourth position. Highly rated 19-year-old Rolando Aarons made his much-anticipated return from injury and completed 45 minutes of the game.

The attacker hit the post after just 15 minutes but found the going tough as time ticked away. Adam Armstrong did his first-team changes no harm after netting twice with superb finishing. The youngster has now given John Carver a valid option for his side.

David Carson gave Blackburn a goal back in the second half, but the gap was solidified once again as Callum Roberts made it 3-1.

Lewis Mansell then gave the Geordies a scare as he scored Rovers' second of the night, but midfielder Oliver Kemen killed the game off with a brilliant curling finish that won the match.

Aarons admitted how tough he had found the game after his comeback but was excited to be back on the pitch:

In the night's only other game, West Bromwich Albion and Derby County battled to a 0-0 draw, stunting the Rams' chances of winning the division.

Derby remain in third place, four points behind leaders Middlesbrough, who have two games in hand.

Monday Recap

Jones, Andreas Pereira and Adnan Januzaj all started for Manchester United, but it was Fletcher who emerged as the hero of the day with his goal in the 17th minute. He quickly reacted to Jones' header, which bounced off the crossbar, to give the hosts a lead they would never relinquish, per the club's official Twitter account:

Sam Gallagher believed he had equalised for the Saints, but the referee called it back for offside. And Gallagher was unlucky not to see his late effort go in, as it clipped the crossbar instead.

There was more drama in store for the visitors when Jake Hesketh suffered the same fate just minutes later. The Red Devils survived Southampton's challenge by the skin of their teeth, but it was good enough to regain first place.

Liverpool had overtaken the Red Devils earlier in the day by beating Leicester City, 2-1, per the club's official Twitter account:

The Foxes had taken the lead through Joe Davis and dominated the first half, continuing their excellent late-season form. But the Reds rallied in the second half, with Daniel Cleary and Cameron Brannagan turning the one-goal deficit into a 2-1 win.

Liverpool and United both still have two matches left on their schedule, and the difference between the two clubs is currently just two points. The Reds' next challenge will be a difficult trip to London to face Chelsea.

The Blues sit four points behind Liverpool but still have two matches in hand, and they comfortably beat Fulham, 3-1, on Monday. Dominic Solanke was once again the big man for Chelsea with two goals, per the club's official Twitter account:

Charly Musonda also managed to get himself on the scoresheet, while Australian striker Adam Taggart scored for the hosts.

Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur served up a true spectacle for the fans in attendance, going back and forth for 90 minutes in a 3-3 draw. Harry Winks thought he had won the match for Spurs by scoring late in the second half, but Jorginho managed to salvage a point for the Citizens.

Alex Iwobi scored the only goal in Arsenal's 1-0 win over Brighton and Hove Albion, pushing the Gunners back into the top four of the Group 2 standings.

Middlesbrough and Reading, who are in the middle of a fierce battle for the Group 2 title, won't be in action during the midweek fixtures.
