Monday Recap
Arsenal were dominant on Monday, though Hull City were a bit unlucky as well, as the Gunners took a 3-1 win.
Hull City watched as a deflected free kick by Alexis Sanchez and a deflected shot by Aaron Ramsey each found their way into the net on the first half. Arsenal put the cherry on top of a dominant first half on the counter-attack, however, as Ramsey played Sanchez through on goal and the Chilean deftly sidestepped Steve Harper and sent the ball rolling into an empty net.
Hull would pull one back in the second half as Stephen Quinn head home Ahmed Elmohamady's brilliant cross, but the Gunners were never in real danger of conceding their lead.
Sunday Recap
A 1-0 win over Crystal Palace was enough for Chelsea to secure the 2014-15 Premier League title on Sunday, as shared by the club's official Twitter account:
Eden Hazard scored the only goal of the match on the stroke of half-time, a headed effort that gave goalkeeper Julian Speroni no chance. The unfortunate stopper did well to stop the Belgian's tame penalty, but Hazard followed through well and easily put the ball in the net.
Some fans and pundits were disappointed the Blues were given the penalty in the first place, as Hazard appeared to dive to win it. Ed Malyon of the Daily Mirror remained diplomatic:
Chelsea easily controlled proceedings in the second half and were never really troubled, counting down the seconds until the official blew the final whistle. When he did, Stamford Bridge exploded in mad celebrations that had seemed inevitable all season long.
Jurgen Klinsmann, former star footballer and current United States' national team coach, was one of many to congratulate the Blues on a fantastic campaign:
Jose Mourinho was visibly ecstatic with the title, via Goal UK:
Chelsea led the Premier League standings from start to finish and were undoubtedly the dominant force of English football all season. Some fans may disapprove of Mourinho's tactics, but there's no denying they worked to perfection in 2014-15. Without a doubt, Chelsea are the deserved champions.
Last year's champions Manchester City booked a pivotal 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane, opening up a three-point lead over Arsenal, who will play Hull City on Monday.
Tottenham dominated the first half and had plenty of chances to open up a lead, but instead, the Citizens managed to score the first goal. Sergio Aguero finished a textbook counter move, taking his tally to 22 goals this season. As shared by Bleacher Report UK, he somehow still didn't make the PFA Team of the Year:
Squawka shared some statistics, which showed just how disappointed Mauricio Pochettino must have been with his players:
Spurs failed to bridge the gap in the second half, and as a result, failed to increase their lead over Southampton with an eye on the race for the Europa League. The Saints suffered a shock loss at the hands of Sunderland on Saturday, but Tottenham missed a golden opportunity to take advantage against City.
With just three matches left on the schedule, the gap is a single point.
Saturday Recap
Gerrard went from zero to hero in the span of minutes, first missing a penalty but atoning with a late winner to hand Liverpool the win against QPR.
The veteran captain powered a header past Robert Green that took him straight back to Istanbul and the Champions League final win over AC Milan, arguably the highlight of his career, via ESPN's John Brewin:
In truth, the Reds stole the win on Saturday. Liverpool looked as sluggish and out of sync as they have since the lost FA Cup semi-final against Aston Villa, and while they certainly had the better chances, it seemed almost inevitable they would once again drop vital points in the race for a top-four finish.
Leroy Fer had cancelled out Philippe Coutinho's opener midway through the second half, sparking a frantic push for goal from the Reds. Their efforts looked like they would be rewarded in the 79th minute, but Gerrard failed to put his spot kick past Green. BBC Sport couldn't help but notice the skipper isn't having his greatest season:
QPR face a real battle against relegation and did everything they could to clinch a point at Anfield, but just minutes before the final whistle, Gerrard made up for his earlier miss.
Playing in one of his final matches at Anfield in the iconic red kit, Gerrard had to give credit to the fantastic support, per the Premier League's official Twitter account:
Van Persie wasn't as fortunate as Gerrad on Saturday during United's 1-0 loss against West Brom. The Dutch striker played a strong match but had the chance to tie things up midway through the second half. After Saido Berahino handled the ball, he lined up to take the penalty but saw his effort stopped by Boaz Myhill.
It was that kind of afternoon for United, who dominated possession but failed to translate said dominance into big chances and goals. West Brom scored on a deflected free-kick and did little else but defend.
Manchester Evening News' Samuel Luckhurst was anything but impressed with Louis van Gaal's tactics:
The Red Devils leaned heavily on the long ball and had multiple people playing out of position. Tactically, United were a mess, and their lead over Liverpool in the race for the final Champions League ticket has now sunk to just four points.
Aston Villa and Leicester City have both been in fantastic form of late, and both did themselves a great service in the battle against relegation on Saturday. The Villans beat Everton 3-2, thanks to two goals from Christian Benteke, and the Foxes easily defeated Newcastle 3-0.
Tim Sherwood just keeps doing what he does best, via Not Match of the Day:
Meanwhile, Leicester City were hoping to put some distance between themselves and the teams in the relegation zone, but it wasn't to be. Only Burnley managed to lose their Saturday match, 1-0 at West Ham United, while Sunderland shocked Saints 2-1.
As shared by Bleacher Report UK, we're in for a fantastic finish to the season:
Tottenham Hotspur can jump to a four-point lead over Southampton with a win over defending champions Manchester City on Sunday. Chelsea could clinch the title with a win over Crystal Palace.
Arsenal will travel to play Hull City on Monday, and while the title seems all but lost for the Gunners, the outcome of that match will still play a big role in the race for the Champions League and the battle against the drop.
