Monday Recap

Arsenal's Premier League unbeaten stretch moved to 10 games on Monday, as the Gunners coasted to a 3-1 victory over Hull City.
Forward Alexis Sanchez bookended the scoring for Arsenal. His goal in the 28th minute put them ahead 1-0, and he found the back of the net in first-half injury time to put them 3-0 to the good. Stephen Quinn gave Hull some life in the 56th minute, but they were simply second-best on the day.
Back in October, Hull went into the Emirates Stadium and earned a 2-2 draw. The Gunners were lucky to salvage a point, as Danny Welbeck's equalizer in extra time secured the result.
This is a different Arsenal squad, though—particularly on the defensive end. The club has allowed 10 league goals since the turn of the new year.
And with Alexis leading the way, Hull didn't stand a chance. The Tigers will certainly be happy that this is the last time they'll see him, per OptaJoe:
He barely missed a perfect "10" rating from WhoScored.com on Monday:
According to Opta's David Wall, the Chilean attacker is one of only two Arsenal players to have scored at least 15 goals in a debut season in the Premier League era:
"Two Arsenal players have scored 15+ goals in their first PL campaign: Thierry Henry Alexis Sanchez
— David Wall (@1DavidWall) May 4, 2015"
With Chelsea already clinching the league title, Arsenal can finish no higher than second. The Gunners remain level on points with Manchester City with a game in hand. All things considered, a runner-up finish would be a serious step in the right direction for Arsene Wenger's men.
Meanwhile, Hull are flirting ever-closer with the drop. They are a point ahead of Sunderland, but the Black Cats have a game in hand.
Sunday Recap

Chelsea were crowned champions of English football for the fifth time in the club’s history, as they beat Crystal Palace 1-0 at Stamford Bridge.
Eden Hazard scored the only goal of the game just before half-time, with the Belgian heading home after his penalty was saved by Julian Speroni. The Blues dominated the game in the main, but the Eagles were unhappy about the decision to award the spot-kick to begin with.
However, this day was merely confirming what many have known for a long time now. Chelsea have been the best side in the country throughout the campaign and are worthy winners, as noted by former England striker Gary Lineker:
While Jose Mourinho’s men have been criticised for their altruistic style of play in recent weeks, it’s certainly worth remembering the scintillating attacking football they played earlier on in the campaign.
In Hazard, they have one of the division’s finest player at the moment too, per Squawka Football:
His trademark style of penalty-taking didn’t serve him well here however, as Speroni saved his effort from 12 yards in the 45th minute. But Hazard reacted sharply to the loose ball, planting a header into the corner to give his side a lead at the interval.
As noted by Sam Pilger of FourFourTwo, there was more than a fair share of controversy about the awarding of the penalty, which saw Hazard accentuate some contact:
Nonetheless, the Blues have been brilliant this season. The manner in which Mourinho has set his team out in various matches has been superb and the adaptable traits showcased by this team throughout the campaign has left others trailing.
Indeed, one side who will be hoping to make a better fist of a title tilt next season is Manchester City. The former champions reacted well to the Londoners taking their crown earlier in the day, winning 1-0 away at Tottenham Hotspur thanks to a Sergio Aguero goal.

As we can see here courtesy of OptaJoe, the Argentina striker loves playing against Spurs:
For City, this loss ended a terrible run of away form. Prior to this win at White Hart Lane they’d lost their last five in succession on the road and while it will be scant consolation after faltering so poorly in the title race, Champions League football looks to be guaranteed for Manuel Pellegrini’s men for next season after this victory.
In truth, it could have been even more for City, as the Spurs back four struggled to cope with the intricacy of David Silva and the intensity of Aguero. Seb Stafford-Bloor of Squawka offered a succinct summation of Tottenham’s Federico Fazio’s attempts to contain the forward:
Spurs are now just one point clear of Southampton in the table and face real fight if they’re to overhaul Liverpool, who are a further three points clear in fifth spot. Unfortunately for the Tottenham faithful, a season that showcased so much promise under Mauricio Pochettino seems to be unravelling.
Saturday Recap

Manchester United suffered their third defeat in succession, as West Bromwich Albion executed a classic smash-and-grab to win 1-0 at Old Trafford.
Jonas Olsson opened the scoring for the Baggies in the second period before Robin van Persie had a penalty saved. The Red Devils dominated the game, but despite numerous golden chances, they were unable to breach the defence of Tony Pulis' cohesive team.
With the Baggies set up to frustrate, the opening exchanges in this match were an arduous affair. In addition, as we can see here courtesy of Squawka Football, United have been looking a little bit toothless as of late:
Things got even tougher for the Red Devils after the break, despite keeping West Brom pinned back for long spells in the match. Chris Brunt’s free-kick for the visitors crashed off Olsson in the wall, leaving David de Gea stranded in the United goal. Admittedly, the Swede knew very little about it.
The hosts were given a brilliant chance to get back in the game when Saido Berahino handled the ball in the area, but Van Persie had his kick saved by Boaz Myhill.

Louis van Gaal's side pressed hard in the latter stages. But even with the likes of Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao emerging off the bench, Manchester United were unable to find an equaliser. Now they'll be looking nervously over their shoulder in the race to secure Champions League football.
At the other end of the table, it was another disastrous day for Newcastle United, as a 3-0 defeat to Leicester dragged them further towards a relegation battle.
The Magpies conceded inside the opening minute in this one, as Leonardo Ulloa headed the Foxes ahead after 38 seconds. Things got worse in the 17th minute as Wes Morgan doubled the hosts’ advantage, before Ulloa added his second just after the break to put some gloss on the performance.

It was Newcastle’s eighth defeat in succession, and their misery was compounded when Mike Williamson and Daryl Janmaat were both red-carded in the second half. Remarkably, Toon boss John Carver accused the former of doing so on purpose.
"I thought he'd done that on purpose—it looks like he did," Carver said, per BBC Sport. "The ball was off the pitch—he had no need to make the challenge. He will miss two games. Is it an easy way out?"

A tough day for the Magpies was made even worse, as two of their relegation rivals picked up vital wins.
Sunderland beat Southampton 2-1 thanks to two Jordi Gomez penalties. Sadio Mane netted the only goal for the visitors, and James Ward-Prowse saw red in conceding the second spot-kick.
The hosts took the lead thanks to a first-half penalty, but their joy was short-lived after the Senegalese star capitalised on some calamitous defending two minutes later to level things up. But in a tight affair, Ward-Prowse showed his inexperience to concede a penalty and received his marching orders, and Gomez put Sunderland ahead.

As noted by George Caulkin of The Times, it was a hugely important result for Sunderland in their bid to stay up:
Aston Villa took a big step toward safety themselves, beating Everton 3-2 at Villa Park. Christian Benteke netted a first-half brace to give the hosts a two-goal lead, but Romelu Lukaku halved the deficit with a penalty just before the hour mark.

Tom Cleverley restored Villa’s cushion with a fine goal, and while Phil Jagielka made it a nervy finish with a late header, Tim Sherwood’s side was by far the better team throughout.
As we can see here courtesy of the official Premier League Twitter feed, Benteke has been in sensational form since the turn of the year:
While Villa and Sunderland gave themselves some hope, things are looking increasingly bleak for Burnley and Queens Park Rangers. The former lost 1-0 at West Ham United after Michael Duff saw red for the visitors and Mark Noble slotted home the subsequent penalty.

On Merseyside, QPR suffered late heartbreak, as Steven Gerrard headed home a late winner in a 2-1 win for the Reds. Philippe Coutinho scored an opener before the break in the first half, before Leroy Fer squared things up after half-time.
When Liverpool won a penalty with the clock ticking down, the stage seemed set for Gerrard to seize the headlines on his penultimate Anfield appearance. Rob Green saved his effort, however, but there was little he could do as the Reds icon rose highest from a corner to thump home the winner three minutes from time.
Bleacher Report UK summed up his zero-to-hero transformation:
In the day’s other game, Swansea City beat Stoke City 2-0 in a clash between two sides with very little to play for. Both strikes came in the last 10 minutes for the Welsh club, with Jefferson Montero scoring his first Swans goal before Ki Sung-Yueng made the game safe in injury time.
