Cleveland Browns Mock Draft: Updated Day 3 Predictions

Ryan McCrystalMay 1, 2015

The Cleveland Browns used five picks through the first two days of the 2015 NFL draft, and yet no one is talking about them.

And that's probably the best thing that could possibly happen to the Browns right now.

For once, the team is choosing to take the smart, safe route on draft day and gradually build for the future, rather than swing for the fences and try to solve all its issues with one ill-advised gamble.

Day 3 is typically about just adding the best available player, but here are a few areas the team may hope to address:

  • Wide receiver: Immediate help may not be needed, but the team could use a young prospect to develop as an outside receiver.
  • Tight end: The loss of Jordan Cameron hurt, and the long-term solution to the problem is definitely not on the roster.
  • Kicker: Journeyman Garrett Hartley is just a space-filler while the team tries to find the next Phil Dawson.

Round 4

1 of 4

No. 115: T.J. Clemmings, OT, Pittsburgh

Clemmings' fall to Day 3 is surprising, but it is likely related to a stress fracture in his foot, which was discovered at the combine.

He's a converted defensive tackle who spent two years entrenched as Pitt's starter at right tackle on the offensive line.

While he remains a work in progress as an offensive lineman, he is one of the most athletic linemen in this class and has the ceiling of a first-round pick.

The Browns have the luxury of not needing him to set foot on the field in 2015, which may be the ideal scenario for his development.

No. 116: Tony Lippett, WR, Michigan State

There are other receivers with more upside, but since Ray Farmer is clearly favoring high-character guys in this draft, Lippett would make sense.

Lippett, who also played some cornerback for the Spartans, was beloved by coach Mark Dantonio and seems to fit the mold of the guys Farmer is targeting in this class.

At 6'2", 192 pounds, he has the size to play on the outside and has many of the same traits that Dwayne Bowe has won with in the NFL, making him a good fit for the Browns to develop for an increased role down the road.

Round 5

2 of 4

The Browns traded their fifth-round selection to the New England Patriots as part of a package to acquire an extra third-round pick to take Washington State defensive tackle Xavier Cooper.

Round 6

3 of 4

No. 189: Blake Bell, TE, Oklahoma

Bell, a converted quarterback, is purely a developmental prospect. But with his height (6'6") and athleticism, it's easy to see why teams are intrigued by what he could become.

It would have been nice for the Browns to land a more immediate-impact player at tight end, but this was a shallow draft class at the position.

Bell won't do much to replace Jordan Cameron immediately, but the long-term potential is there.

No. 195: Ben Heeney, LB, Kansas

Since the Browns are locking in on character guys, Heeney is likely somewhere on their draft board. He's a two-time team captain and, according to Lance Zierlein's scouting report, "absolutely beloved by coaching staff."

The Browns could use another inside linebacker to compete with Craig Robertson and Christian Kirksey, as well as take on some special teams responsibilities.

Round 7

4 of 4

No. 219: Josh Lambo, K, Texas A&M

If the Browns actually use all 10 picks, it's almost impossible to see how the entire class of rookies makes the final 53-man roster based on the other players who are under contract.

For that reason, it should not come as a surprise if they spend a late pick on a kicker, which is one of the few remaining spots where a rookie could win a job.

Lambo connected on 21 of 25 field goals during his two years as the starter at Texas A&M, including going 6-of-9 from beyond 40 yards.
