Tyler Vaughns Releases Top 11: Which Schools Fit the Nation's No. 2 WR?
There's no rule in having nice, round numbers when trimming down a list of schools. California wide receiver Tyler Vaughns can attest to that.
The 4-star Bishop Amat Memorial High School prospect, ranked the No. 2 wide receiver in the country, announced on social media late Sunday that he had a top 11. Vaughns has 18 offers total.
Wait...11? Not 10? Not even a dozen?

Turns out that "School 10A" and "School 10B"—Arizona State and Florida, respectively—were in a too-close-to-call situation, and Vaughns decided to keep both on the list for now. Five Pac-12 teams and three SEC squads form the majority of the list, along with the Big 12's Oklahoma, the Big Ten's Nebraska and independent Notre Dame.
All 11 schools, Vaughns said, have the same common denominator: communication.
"I've stayed in touch with these coaches almost every day," Vaughns said. "They are making it seem like they want me to actually go to their school."
Wherever he ends up, Vaughns is expected to be an impact player upon arrival. At The Opening Los Angeles regional in March, he measured in at 6'2" and 172 pounds, and he used his size and athleticism to earn an invitation to The Opening finals this summer in Oregon. He caught 83 passes for 1,183 yards and 12 touchdowns as a junior for Bishop Amat.
Early predictions are heavy for USC to land Vaughns in February. Of the 16 predictions made on Vaughns' 247Sports Crystal Ball, all 16 are in favor of the Trojans.
Vaughns choosing USC would make sense, as he's a fan of the Trojans offense and the coaching staff. Wide receivers coach Tee Martin has built a great relationship with Vaughns, as has head coach Steve Sarkisian.
The Trojans have yet to land a 4-star receiver pledge, but they have the nation's No. 2 all-purpose back in Melquise Stovall and 4-star offensive tackles in Frank Martin II and Nathan Smith to build the offensive class around. If Vaughns were to commit today, he'd be USC's top-ranked pledge and eighth pledge overall.
But Vaughns will be the first to say that while many feel USC is in front, every school in his top 11 should be considered a primary candidate for a landing spot. UCLA is just as attractive to him, and he would be a major get for the Bruins. Joining the 4-star 2016 receiver tandem of Darian Owens and Michael Pittman while ultimately catching passes from 2015 signee Josh Rosen could be enough to sway Vaughns down the road.
And then there are out-of-state schools. Oklahoma has done an outstanding job in the past of recruiting California wide receivers. Head coach Bob Stoops can hang his hat on signing the NFL's Kenny Stills and, most recently, 2014 signees Michiah Quick and Dallis Todd, among others.
Alabama, Georgia and Florida are schools to watch, as the three SEC powers consistently produce professional talent. Alabama's Amari Cooper is projected to be a top-five pick in Thursday's NFL draft. All three programs have solid traditions of producing players at the position, and all three have respected receivers coaches.
So what will separate these schools—and the others a part of the top 11—in order to win Vaughns over?
In short, he wants to find the place he "can call home" and also find the right place where he'll be able to pursue his degree.
"I want to major in business and communications," he said. "Really, [I'm] just trying to see myself as if I'm there and see if I fit into the offense."
Vaughns has made unofficial visits to USC, UCLA, Arizona State and Washington. He's looking into summer visits to a few more out-of-state schools, including Alabama, Georgia and Oklahoma.
