Liverpool Transfer News: Latest Edinson Cavani, Moses Simon Rumours

Gianni VerschuerenApr 28, 2015

Speculation continues to mount over the future of reported Liverpool transfer target Edinson Cavani, with the latest reports from France saying the striker will force his way out of Paris Saint-Germain during the summer.

PSG have only just ruled out the possibility of selling the Uruguay international, via ESPN FC, but clearly, that won't stop the transfer rumours:

According to Le Parisien (h/t Daily Mirror's Aaron Flanagan), the striker understands the French champions will continue using him as a wide player, rather than a central forward, and if that happens, he will leave the club during the summer.

Most pundits seem to agree Cavani might be a lot closer to the exit door than PSG claim. French Football Weekly's Andrew Gibney was hardly impressed by the strong message from the club:

Gianlucadimarzio.com's David Amoyal also isn't convinced, reminding his followers Nasser Al-Khelaifi was doing his job when he publicly spoke out in support of Cavani:

The former Napoli man hasn't been a tremendous success at the Parc des Princes since making the move to France, but with Zlatan Ibrahimovic playing down the centre and Cavani often pushed in a wide role, struggles were to be expected.

Cavani looks uncomfortable out wide and looks as if he's playing without confidence, a far cry from the deadly scorer who rose to prominence in Serie A.

Matteo Bonetti explained why the striker could be successful playing in the Premier League:

The main issue is the fact PSG invested heavily in Cavani when they first brought him to Paris, and they'll wish to recover most of said investment in a potential sale. Cavani may be unhappy with his current role, but he holds almost no leverage heading into the summer.

PSG were slapped with transfer restrictions for financial fair play violations this past season, but those violations have since been cleared. They're not in dire need of cash, and while they'd likely wish to move Cavani in order to clear up their books a bit, they can definitely afford to wait.

Liverpool threw a ton of money at the attacking positions during the summer of 2014, with mixed results. Whether the club will do the same one year later is a question that won't be resolved until the market actually opens.

Reds Face Competition For Moses Simon

Moses Simon has been the top breakout player in Belgium the past six months, and as reported by Metro's Jamie McLaughlin, the Nigerian teenager will be a wanted man during the summer:

"

The latest rumour is that Rodgers is showing an interest in 19-year-old Nigerian Moses Simon, after the youngster impressed in both the Belgium League for Gent and in the Orange African U20 Championship.

According from reports from Turkey, Liverpool will face competition from Tottenham and Fenerbahce for the talented striker.

Gent technical director, Michael Louwagie, insisted that any club willing to win their striker’s services must part with £14.3million.

"

Simon moved to Belgium during the winter transfer window as a complete unknown and completely tore up the competition from the moment he landed. The 19-year-old has been the standout performer of the league and the main reason behind Gent's unexpected challenge for the title.

Outsideoftheboot.com's Mert Conker recently wrote a profile on the player, and he didn't hide his admiration for the Nigeria international, calling him a future star:

The Nigerian is raw, but he boasts incredible pace, touch and technique to go along with a keen eye for goal and excellent vision. As a 19-year-old, there's plenty of room left to grow, but he's already a gifted player.

Whether he's ready to contribute to a club the magnitude of Liverpool immediately is another matter. As mentioned, he's raw and inexperienced, and it's difficult to gauge exactly how good he is based on six months of fantastic play in the Belgian league.

He won't come cheap, either. Gent have just moved into a brand-new stadium and are trying to establish themselves as a dominant force in Belgian football. Clubs like that don't just sell their most prized asset six months after bringing him into the squad.

If the Reds want to move for Simon, they'll have to take a significant financial risk for a player with limited experience. Add to that the fact the teenager seems quite happy in Belgium, and a summer transfer seems like an unlikely scenario.
