Rory MarsdenApr 25, 2015

Manchester City moved up into second place in the Premier League on Saturday as they edged Aston Villa 3-2 at the Etihad Stadium, Fernandinho bagging the late winner.

The Sky Blues could drop back to fourth on Sunday if Manchester United and Arsenal beat Everton and Chelsea, respectively.

At the bottom of the table, Leicester City moved out of the relegation zone with a 1-0 win over Burnley, while Queens Park Rangers and Sunderland could only pick up draws.

City Leave it Late

City let a 2-0 lead slip against Villa on Saturday, but Fernandinho's late strike eventually gave them all three points.

Sergio Aguero scored the opener in the third minute, tapping into an empty net after Villa goalkeeper Brad Guzan calamitously sliced a clearance straight to the Argentinian.

Villa improved as the match progressed, but they could not find an equaliser, and Aleksandar Kolarov made it 2-0 with a whipped free-kick on 66 minutes.

However, Tom Cleverley snatched a goal back minutes later—firing past Joe Hart, who was caught in no man's land—before Carlos Sanchez's 15-yard volley made it 2-2 with five minutes to go.

Villa looked to have claimed an unlikely but deserved point, but an 89th-minute corner fell to Fernandinho to fire home, leaving Tim Sherwood's side just two points above the relegation zone.

City are nine points back from table-topping Chelsea, and with the Blues having played two games fewer, any hopes of a title win for Manuel Pellegrini's side were already effectively dashed.

Hart admitted as much after the Villa win, per the Premier League, but City will still hope to finish the season above Arsenal and the Red Devils:

Although they were unconvincing on Saturday, back-to-back victories now see City back in some kind of form following defeats to United and Crystal Palace.

Villa, though, must respond positively in their next fixture against Everton, as they face a tough run-in that includes trips to Arsenal and Southampton.

Leicester On for Great Escape

The Foxes registered their fourth straight league win on Saturday to move out of the relegation zone and keep their hopes of Premier League survival alive.

Their 1-0 victory over Burnley at Turf Moor was hugely significant as it came against a relegation rival, and the Clarets now sit bottom of the league.

Jamie Vardy's scrambled winner on the hour came just a minute after Matt Taylor missed a penalty at the other end, and on such margins will relegation or survival be decided.

Leicester were boosted also by QPR's goalless draw at home to West Ham United—in which Charlie Austin missed a penalty—and Sunderland's 1-1 draw with Stoke City.

Hull City gave themselves every chance of survival as they beat Crystal Palace 2-0 to move out of the drop zone.

As The Sun intimates, Burnley and QPR look somewhat doomed, leaving just one relegation spot to be filled:

Sunderland look the most likely to fill it, meaning another season in the top flight for Leicester—a scenario that looked highly unlikely not so long ago.
