Manchester City beat Aston Villa 3-2 in controversial fashion in Saturday's Premier League action, needing a late goal from Fernandinho to beat the Villans, who were denied a clear penalty just moments later. 

Liverpool suffered another setback in their push for a top-four finish, playing out a scoreless draw against West Bromwich Albion, while Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton drew 2-2 in the battle for the Europa League.

Chelsea did what they had to on Sunday, going into the Emirates Stadium and holding Arsenal to a 0-0 draw to move another step closer to the Premier League title.

The Gunners were the better team after half-time in an eventful match, but Chelsea rightly felt robbed before the break, with several decisions from the official going against them.

Indeed, referee Michael Oliver had the kind of outing that leads to people actually learning who Michael Oliver is, per Bleacher Report UK:

After half-time, the Blues simply did what they do best, putting in a fantastic defensive performance to fend off the Arsenal attack and escape the Emirates with a point.

The result means the gap at the top of the standings remains 10 points with five matches left on the schedule, and while the Blues aren't yet mathematically sure of winning this year's title, it only seems to be a matter of time.

Everton continued their fine form with a 3-0 win over Manchester United, and the Red Devils have now lost back-to-back Premier League matches for the first time under Louis van Gaal.

The Dutch manager is well aware the battle for a top-four finish is far from over, as shared by the club's official Twitter account:

James McCarthy, John Stones and Kevin Mirallas all scored against an uninspired United squad, as the Toffees dominated from start to finish. They now sit in 10th place in the standings, an unexpected rise after a dismal start to the season.

The Red Devils were overrun in midfield and hardly ever got their striker involved. Radamel Falcao continued his horror season, actually scoring a fine goal that was called back for offside. Manchester Evening News' Rob Dawson believed it summed up his 2014-15 campaign in a nutshell:

Liverpool can close the gap in the race for the final Champions League tickets to just four points if they win the match they still have in hand, and while United should still be favourites to finish the season in the top four, they'll have to end their slide in a hurry.

There's four matches left to be played in the 2014-15 season, and Van Gaal's troops will have to be at their best to hold off the challenge from the teams currently sitting behind them.

Manchester City beat Aston Villa 3-2 at the Etihad on Saturday, but while there was plenty to analyse following yet another disappointing outing for Manuel Pellegrini's men, most talk will likely revolve the final 10 minutes.

The Citizens gave up a 2-0 lead, prompting Bleacher Report UK to send out this tweet, and with City once again looking underwhelming, it appeared Pellegrini's seat was set to become a little hotter:

But with victory in sight for the visitors, Christian Benteke was wrongly called back for offside in a bizarre incident that should have resulted in a penalty for Villa, and from the resulting attack, Fernandinho gave City an improbable win.

Liverpool and West Brom played out a drab scoreless draw, with only a handful of chances falling to the Reds late in the match. Once again, the visitors lacked any form of creativity in the buildup, a far cry from the side that was in the middle of a fantastic win streak just weeks ago.

At half-time, ESPN FC's Miguel Delaney wondered whether the Reds had forgotten they're still battling for a spot in next year's Champions League:

City's last-second win sees the club jump all the way to second place in the standings for the time being, opening up a nine-point lead over the Reds.

Southampton's 2-2 draw against Spurs means Ronald Koeman's squad has already surpassed its highest point total in Premier League history, via Ladbrokes, although the Champions League hopes of both sides have all but evaporated following the result:

Both sides knew they had to win to keep up with the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City in the race for fourth, but a brace from Graziano Pelle and goals from Erik Lamela and Nacer Chadli cancelled each other out.

Harry Kane was kept quiet throughout the contest by the Saints defence, but Chadli took over the role of primary scoring threat and came through when it mattered the most.

Spurs are still tied with Liverpool on points, with Southampton one point further back in the race for the Europa League. The Reds still have a match in hand, however.

Leicester City's improbable resurgence continued with a 1-0 win over Burnley, with Jamie Vardy scoring just one minute after Matthew Taylor missed a penalty for the hosts.
