Valencia jumped into the top four of the La Liga table thanks to a dominant 4-0 home victory over Granada on Monday at Mestalla Stadium.

Javi Fuego got on the scoresheet first for Los Che in the 26th minute.  the momentum really went with the winning side when Daniel Parejo drove home a penalty kick in the 40th just before the halfway intermission.

OptaJose alluded to how great of a season Parejo is having:

After sitting on the lead for much of the second half, Sofiane Feghouli and Alvaro Negredo both found the back of the net in the 85th and 88th minutes respectively to add insult to injury for Granada (h/t ESPN FC).

David Cartlidge of beIN Sports USA highlighted the tremendous job Valencia has done of late in protecting their home pitch:

Granada failed to even get a shot on the goal, which made keeping a clean sheet a rather easy task. Los Che dominated possession at 62 percent, so the opposing attack could barely muster anything productive all day.

It's going to take a strong effort from El Grana to avoid relegation. Only Cordoba remains below them in the league, and there aren't many matches remaining to rack up points. Next up for Granada is Espanyol, so life doesn't promise to get much easier.

As Valencia seek to hold their Champions League position in the standings, they must be sure to take care of business in their next two matches. Los Che will be favored against the likes of Rayo Vallecano and Eibar before a huge test against trophy contender Real Madrid.

Sunday Recap

Real Madrid made it 99 league goals for the season as they continued their chase of Barcelona at the top of La Liga with a 4-2 win at Celta Vigo.

Los Blancos were shocked into action as the hosts took a surprise lead through Nolito in just the ninth minute. The Celta man found the corner of the net with a right foot shot to stun their illustrious opponents.

But their lead did not last long, as German international Toni Kroos equalised seven minutes later. The midfielder found the top corner of the net to tie the scoreline and put Madrid back in control.

But the tension went back and forth as both teams attacked, and it wasn't long before the two sides had both netted again.

Javier Hernandez continued his recent run of good form, as he scored from a tight angle after being assisted by James Rodriguez, but Santi Mina promptly tied the score at 2-2 from close range.

And just as the game was drifting towards half time, the Galacticos once again took command, as James scored just before the break. A pass from Cristiano Ronaldo allowed the Colombian a shot from the edge of the box, and he made sure of his effort.

Madrid had to wait until the 69th minute to kill the game as a contest, with Chicharito grabbing his second after a through ball from Sergio Ramos.

In the day's other games, Malaga and Deportivo La Coruna played out a 1-1 draw, boosting the away side's relegation fight.

Nordin Amrabat gave Malaga the lead at the start of the second half, but Oriol Riera headed in on the hour mark in a closely fought contest.

Almeria climbed out of the bottom three with a 2-0 win against Eibar. Thievy Bifouma and Verza gave the Mediterraneo side the points as they also look to survive in the Spanish top flight.

Sevilla climbed up the table to fourth after a comfortable 2-0 victory against Rayo Vallecano. First-half goals from Vicente Iborra and Daniel Carrico were enough to seal the points.

Saturday Recap

Barcelona moved five points clear of Real Madrid in the La Liga table, at least for now, as they overcame Espanyol 2-0 in Saturday’s derby.

Neymar opened the scoring after 17 minutes, sweeping home after a terrific build-up.

Lionel Messi then doubled the Barca lead with his 36th league goal of the season, per WhoScored.com, in a dominant first-half performance.

It was more of the same after the break, as Barcelona continued to torment their hosts, but Espanyol were then handed a lifeline in the 54th minute.

Jordi Alba was sent off after picking up two yellow cards in quick succession, the first for kicking the ball away, swiftly followed by a second for dissent.

A touch harsh potentially, but it was petulant from the Spaniard, per The Times’ Gabriele Marcotti:

However, Barca continued to control the match and saw out the victory, Espanyol’s Hector Moreno also seeing red in stoppage time.

Defending champions Atletico Madrid eased to a 3-0 victory at home to Elche, with top scorer Antoine Griezmann netting twice, each side of Raul Garcia’s goal.

All three goals came in the second half, when Atleti really came into their own. Griezmann headed the first 10 minutes after the break before Garcia drilled home from outside the box in the 63rd minute.

The Frenchman got his second to seal the win 13 minutes from time as he turned Jesus Gamez’s cross into the back of the net.

As Spanish football writer David Cartlidge notes, Griezmann has had an impressive season and is in a rich vein of form:

Atleti will not win the league again this season, but third place looks fairly certain, as they are now seven points clear of Valencia.

Levante moved themselves four points clear of the drop zone as they won away at Getafe, with Victor Casadesus netting the only goal of the game in the 35th minute.

Meanwhile, Real Sociedad and Villarreal played out a goalless draw at the Anoeta Stadium, the visitors having an 88th-minute goal disallowed for offside.

Friday Recap

Benat Etxebarria scored the only goal in Athletic Bilbao's 1-0 win over Cordoba, extending the latter's winless streak to 15 matches.

The hosts came out with plenty of attacking intentions, as shared by OptaJose, but they were hardly able to translate their shooting form into real chances:

Bebe came close once during the first half, blasting a shot off the bar, and Angel Crespo really should have done better after half-time when he came face to face with Gorka Iraizoz Moreno.

Instead, it was Etxebarria who broke the deadlock after his shot took a deflection, looping over Juan Carlos Martin and into the back of the net.

The Basques nearly doubled their lead late in the match, but Aritz Adruiz's header was met by Carlos Martin, who managed to push the ball onto the cross bar.

As shared by Soccer-Spain, the result sees Athletic draw level with Malaga in the standings, and they now sit just six points behind Villarreal in the race for the final play-off ticket:

Cordoba still sit in last place in the standings following the result, and while it's still mathematically possible for them to avoid relegation, time is quickly starting to run out.

Stopper Martin Carlos is not yet ready to give up on the fight to avoid the drop, as reported by AP (for NBC Sports):

"

The team went out there trying to win today, and we had a lot of chances to score a goal. But we just weren't able to so and they scored off a bounce.

The only thing left to do is to try and pick ourselves up and keep fighting while we still are mathematically alive.

"

Athletic are unlikely to overtake Villarreal in the standings, but Ernesto Valverde's squad has enjoyed quite the resurgence in the second half of the season and will like their chances of challenging for a European ticket next season.

The Basques still have five matches to catch up to the Yellow Submarine, so fans should fasten their seat belts for a furious finish to the competition.
