Chivas vs. America: Date, Live Stream and More for 2015 El Super Clasico

Mark BuckinghamApr 24, 2015

It’s the biggest game in Mexican football on Sunday and the battle between Chivas and Club America at the Estadio Omnilife is going to be a defining one in both teams’ seasons.

Chivas have confounded all expectations this season as, rather than being involved in a fight against relegation, they are top of the table after being rejuvenated by coach Jose Manuel de la Torre.

In contrast, last season’s champions America are being forced to work harder than they would have expected to make the play-offs and coach Gustavo Matosas needs a win to alleviate some of the pressure on his shoulders.

With so much at stake, Mexico’s two most successful and popular teams, per Cesar Hernandez of ESPN, are building up to what should be a memorable El Super Clasico.

Here’s all the information you need on where to catch the game and a closer look at the fixture.

Date: Sunday, April 26

Time: 7.30 p.m. (ET)

Live Stream: Bet 365 will provide a live stream (per Livesoccertv.com)

TV Info: Univision and Univision Deportes Network from 7.20 p.m. (ET)

Recent History

Chivas head into the game with only one win in the last six meetings with America. In this fixture last season, America won 4-0 and the last game between the two clubs was a 0-0 draw in November when the champions had taken their foot off the gas.

There has been almost a role reversal since then, with Chivas flourishing under De la Torre to sit top of the standings after 14 games. A 1-1 draw with Club Tijuana in their last game made it five matches unbeaten.

There was a setback in midweek, though, when Chivas lost 4-2 to Puebla in the final of the Copa MX as they went in search of a first trophy since 2010. De la Torre’s gamble to play a largely reserve side backfired, but he will be hoping his first-choice players can maintain their excellent form.

As for America, they were thrashed 4-0 at home by Queretaro last weekend when the Brazilian superstar Ronaldinho came on as a late substitute and scored two goals as you can see in the video below. On the back of a couple of other heavy defeats, it has not helped Matosas’ standing with supporters.

In midweek, America also fluffed their lines in the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions League final against Montreal Impact. America were widely expected to prove far too strong for their MLS opponents, but needed an 89th-minute equaliser from Oribe Peralta to salvage a 1-1 draw.

It means that, going in to the game with Chivas, Matosas can’t afford another poor result.

Key Players

Omar Bravo

Now 35 years old, Bravo is enjoying his third spell at Chivas and he needs just two more goals to equal the club record of Salvador “Chava” Reyes, per Tom Marshall of ESPN.

Bravo again proved his worth to Chivas by scoring the equaliser against Tijuana in their last league game and he sat out the cup-final defeat by Puebla to ensure he is fresh for the clash with America.

He still possesses a predatory eye for goal, and sharp movement in the box, and Bravo will keep a struggling America defence on their toes.

Oribe Peralta

The Mexico international, who scored the winner against Cameroon at last year’s World Cup, has been struggling with injuries of late and was only fit enough to be a substitute against Montreal. However, he underlined his importance to America by coming on to score the late equaliser.

Whether he is fit enough to start against Chivas or not, he boasts the quality to make an impact at any stage of the game and Matosas has probably never needed the club’s big-money signing more than he will on Sunday.

As Andrea Canales of ESPN writes, Peralta is going to be a key figure:

"

The final third will be crucial for Club America. The Aguilas players move the ball well usually, but this season, the opponents’ goal has been a mystery for them which they haven’t solved with consistency, even with the quality they boast in Oribe Peralta, Dario Benedetto, Darwin Quintero and Rubens Sambueza. If they can get going, though, watch out.

"

With the pressure on America to get a positive result, Chivas can put their defensive resilience to good use by keeping their rivals at bay. But, with Chivas not noted for big wins this season either, it could prove to be a low-scoring El Super Clasico.

Prediction: Chivas 0 America 0
