Sunday Recap

Manchester City responded in the perfect manner to their derby defeat to Manchester United last weekend as they beat West Ham United 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Their first win in three Premier League matches, City took the lead through a James Collins own goal before Sergio Aguero added the second on 36 minutes.

The result moves City seven points clear of fifth-placed Liverpool, edging Manuel Pellegrini’s men closer to securing Champions League football next season.

They are now just one point back from the Red Devils after United’s Saturday defeat to Chelsea.

City took the lead in the 18th minute as centre-back Collins mis-kicked a routine clearance from a Jesus Navas cross, looping the ball over the despairing Adrian and into the net.

The lead was doubled before half-time, City breaking with speed, and Navas and Aguero exchanging passes before the Argentine slotted home.

The second goal effectively signalled game over, and City protected their lead with ease in the second half.

David Silva was stretchered off late on, appearing to receive oxygen following lengthy treatment after Cheikhou Kouyate elbowed him, per Marca:

West Ham’s horrendous run of form continues. The Hammers have won just once in the league since January.

Similarly, Newcastle lost their sixth match on the bounce as Tottenham defeated them 3-1.

Nacer Chadli opened the scoring for the visitors, drilling home from 25 yards out, but Jack Colback returned the hosts to parity just after half-time.

However, Christian Eriksen saw Spurs back into the lead with a free-kick in the 53rd minute, and Harry Kane confirmed the victory as he slotted home late on.

It was Kane's 20th league goal of the season, and he joins some elite company at the north London club, per Opta:

Spurs are now tied with Liverpool on 57 points and are in with a real chance of playing Europa League football next season.

Saturday Recap

Chelsea won Week 33's top clash with Manchester United 1-0, all but ensuring the Premier League title will return to Stamford Bridge at the end of the season. The Blues' lead over Arsenal is now 10 points, a nearly insurmountable lead with just a handful of matches left to be played.

United dominated possession throughout the first half but mustered few chances, with Radamel Falcao in particular failing to provide much of a target in the box. And when Chelsea hit back on the counter, in-form Eden Hazard immediately broke the deadlock, slipping the ball past David De Gea.

According to Bleacher Report's Sam Tighe, it's clear who should win this year's PFA Player of the Year award:

The Red Devils tried to fight back in the second half, but the best chances were for the league leaders, who hit the crossbar late and easily held on for the win.

Southampton suffered a shock 2-1 loss at the hands of Stoke City, severely damaging their chances of securing a finish among the European spots. Tottenham Hotspur sit just two points back and could leap over Saints with a win over Newcastle United on Sunday.

As Eurosport.com shared, Stoke don't often beat Southampton at home:

Morgan Schneiderlin had given the visitors the lead at half-time, but Mame Biram Diouf hit back immediately after the break before the in-form Charlie Adam ensured the win with a lovely strike.

Everton didn't have it easy against Burnley, winning 1-0 to condemn the Clarets to last place in the standings. Kevin Mirallas scored the only goal of the match, once again underlining how important his Belgian stars are to manager Roberto Martinez, via Squawka:

The Toffees missed a penalty in the first half, and ITV Football couldn't believe Ross Barkley was given the responsibility of converting it:

Everton's bid to preserve their lead in the second half was made a bit easier by the dismissal of Ashley Barnes, who ran into his second yellow card just before half-time.

As the club's Twitter feed shared, Roberto Martinez was happy with his team's performance but not the lack of goals:

West Bromwich continued their fine form with a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace, while Leicester City's 2-0 win over Swansea City means the Foxes are very much alive in the race against relegation.

Former England international Gary Lineker is excited to see how things play out:

Manchester City and West Ham United will face off on Sunday before Newcastle host Tottenham. Arsenal won't feature this weekend due to their FA Cup semi-final match against Reading.
