Sunday Recap

Draws were the name of the game Sunday, with half of the clashes on the slate ending in a deadlock.

Villarreal and Getafe played a closer-than-expected match, with Ikechukwu Uche and Diego Castro each netting a goal to close the match in a 1-1 tie. After a scoreless first half, Uche scored the match's first goal in the 52nd minute on a penalty kick caused when Mehdi Lacen tripped him up in the zone.

The lead did not last long, however, as Castro knocked a Roberto Lago cross through in the 64th minute to bring the game closer. The two sides largely played even from there, and the overall game stats bear the fruits of a closely contested match. Getafe held possession for 56 percent of the match and Villarreal had more shots on goal, but it was otherwise a contest where one break could have made the difference.

The draw continues Villarreal's descent toward the bottom of the table. They have lost or drawn in each of their last seven matches, a streak that all but confirms they'll finish outside the top four. Getafe, meanwhile, get themselves a point that further solidifies their status outside relegation.

Speaking of relegation, Deportivo got themselves a critical 2-2 draw with Real Sociedad on Sunday to stay just clear of a top-division ouster. Jose Toche netted the game-tying score in the 78th minute, making the decision to enter him into the game at the 67-minute mark seem genius. Sociedad had pulled ahead on a Gonzalo Castro score in the 57th minute.

Xabi Prieto (33') and Lucas (40') scored the first-half goals for Sociedad and Deportivo, respectively. Deportivo were the aggressor for most of the match, attempting 16 shots to Sociedad's nine and committing a staggering 19 fouls. Victor Sanchez's side is tied with two others near the teetering point of relegation, but their minus-22 goal differential is keeping them afloat.

On a more positive note, Espanyol continued to get sterling play from Sergio Garcia in their 1-0 triumph over Athletic Bilbao. Garcia netted a goal in the 40th minute, taking a pass from Victor Alvarez and striking it past Gorka Iraizoz. His goal was the only one on goal for Espanyol, and there were only three legitimate attempts total for the match.

Espanyol are now a very solid eighth in the table.

Elche are now a solid 15th and appear out of relegation danger following their 2-0 win over Cordoba. Enzo Roco scored in the 41st minute and Mario Pasalic in the 68th. Elche were victorious despite committing 26 fouls and having possession for only 47 percent of the match.

Saturday Recap

Real Madrid's pursuit of Barcelona and first place in the Liga standings continued in earnest Saturday as Los Blancos made easy work of Eibar in a 3-0 victory at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.

Both Javier Hernandez and Jese scored for Los Merengues but much of the talk focused on La Liga's top goalscorer Cristiano Ronaldo, as he extended his lead over Messi in somewhat unexpected fashion.

It is no secret the Portuguese superstar has struggled on free-kicks as of late, but he managed to beat goalkeeper Xabi Irureta with a tricky set piece that ended a nearly year-long drought, according to Squawka Football:

Per ESPN Stats and Info, it took 32 free-kick attempts between La Liga and the UEFA Champions League this season before Ronaldo finally converted:

Ronaldo has long been considered one of the most dangerous free-kick artists in the world, and now that he has some confidence in that regard, it is a scary proposition for the rest of La Liga.

Real Madrid put the pressure on Barca by winning their match Saturday, and it certainly enhanced what was already a captivating battle for first place.

Following Real Madrid's comfortable victory, Atletico Madrid looked to keep pace on the road against Malaga. A 2-2 draw wasn't the desired result, but it was better than the alternative as Colchoneros needed a late goal to avoid defeat.

As has been the case so often this season, Atletico Madrid was led by the spectacular play of forward Antoine Griezmann, who scored twice to move into sole possession of third place in the La Liga goal-scoring race.

After his first goal in the 25th minute, Griezmann set a new career high in La Liga goals, according to OptaJose:

Atletico Madrid fell behind 2-0 after a Fernando Torres own goal and then a Samu goal in the 71st minute, but Griezmann bailed them out by equalizing in the 78th minute.

The point gained from the draw allowed Atletico Madrid to extend its third-place lead over Valencia to four, but it certainly damaged their pursuit of one of the top two spots in the table.

Following rival Real Madrid's win earlier in the day, Barcelona looked to match that effort in a considerably more difficult match on the road against Sevilla FC.

Things were looking good for Barca early as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half by virtue of goals from all-world duo Messi and Neymar.

Messi's goal canceled out the one scored by Ronaldo and lessened his lead to four in the La Liga scoring race. Neymar's goal marked his 18th of the season, which tied him with Griezmann for third.

The Brazilian's goal also happened to be his first free-kick marker since becoming a Blaugrana member, per Infostrada Sports:

As great as Barca looked early in the match, Sevilla matched their effort for the remainder of the contest. Ever Banega made it 2-1 with a goal in the 38th minute, while Kevin Gameiro tied it late with an 84th-minute equalizer.

Getting a draw against Sevilla on the road is usually a solid result, but it will be tough for Barcelona fans to think that way after squandering a 2-0 lead.

If nothing else, though, it certainly makes the battle for first place in La Liga even more entertaining as Real Madrid are now just two points back.

Saturday's play closed with a pair of blowouts as Almeria defeated Granada 3-0 to move past Deportivo and out of the relegation zone, while Celta Vigo destroyed Rayo Vellecano 6-1, and jumped from 12th place to ninth place.

The La Liga table looks much different now than it did prior to Saturday's slate, and it should make for a great stretch run, especially with Barca and Real Madrid battling at the top.
