La Liga Table 2015: Updated Standings Following Matchday 31 Results

Tom SunderlandApr 11, 2015

Real Madrid thumped Eibar 3-0 in Saturday's early kick-off to close the gap distancing them from La Liga leaders Barcelona, with Luis Enrique's side drawing at Sevilla to fall further within reach of Los Merengues.

Atletico Madrid were unable to replicate the exploits of their local rivals, however, and were held to a 2-2 draw at Malaga to leave themselves at risk of falling outside the top three.

The La Liga landscape is in a precarious position at its peak, where the slightest slip-up at this stage could mean the difference between silverware hopes being kept alive or dashed altogether.

Monday Recap

Valencia prevailed in Monday's only La Liga clash, beating Levante 3-0 at the Mestalla to move within a point of third-placed Atletico.

Relegation candidates Levante stayed in the bottom three as a result of Monday's defeat but can move out of the drop zone, at least briefly, if they beat Espanyol at home on Friday.

The hosts were denied an opener in the 12th minute after Sofiane Feghouli squared to Paco Alcacer to turn home, but it was ruled out for offside, perhaps incorrectly, per AS:

It mattered little, though, as Alcacer headed the ball home to make it 1-0 in the 16th minute, Daniel Parejo having provided the key cross.

It was another headed goal in the 36th minute that doubled Valencia's lead as Feghouli nodded home for 2-0, and Levante were left with a lot to do come the second half.

The hosts controlled the game after the break, happy to sit on their comfortable lead, and substitute Alvaro Negredo scored a fine left-footed half-volley in stoppage time to add gloss to the scoreline.

A third-place La Liga finish now looks a genuine possibility, although Los Che have the small matter of a trip to the Camp Nou next up to face Barcelona.

Sunday Recap

Not for the first time this season, Sergio Garcia proved to be Espanyol's guiding light as Los Periquitos beat Athletic Bilbao to climb above the Lions and up to eighth in La Liga's standings.

While his golfing namesake was paired alongside Tiger Woods at the Augusta Masters on Sunday, the Espanyol striker showed a predatory instinct to bag the only goal of the game against Athletic, per Spanish newspaper Sport:

Having beaten Villarreal in a shock 3-0 triumph last time out, Espanyol are now targeting higher honours and are unbeaten in five outings, their longest streak of the 2014-15 season.

David Moyes' Real Sociedad side were less successful against Deportivo La Coruna and could only manage a 2-2 draw against the relegation contenders, but Chory Castro earned the attention of Bleacher Report's Matteo Bonetti with his strike:

Castro's goal put the hosts 2-1 up after Xabi Prieto gave La Real a lead from the penalty spot, but Depor would again equalise thanks to Toche's 78th-minute intervention, stealing a valuable point from Basque country.

Villarreal's slump continued in Madrid, as they failed to hold onto a 1-0 lead against Getafe to draw 1-1. However, as reported by The Associated Press, the Yellow Submarine suffered an even greater disappointment, as centre-back Mateo Musacchio broke his left ankle in grim fashion:

The defender's injury only heaps further woe on Marcelino's side, and Musacchio is in a race to be back for next season, with Villarreal having now gone five games without a win, their longest barren spell of the campaign.

In Sunday's late fixture, Elche ended a four-match winless streak thanks to a 2-0 victory at basement side Cordoba, doing their bid for survival a world of good and moving up to 15th as a result, with three points now separating them from the bottom three.

Saturday Recap

League leaders Barca were traumatised on Saturday after letting slip a 2-0 lead at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan to draw 2-2 with Sevilla.

A share of the spoils comes as a far more acceptable result for Unai Emery's men and, as John Bennett of the BBC suggests, ensures the La Liga title hunt is most assuredly back on:

Enrique's men surged into a two-goal lead thanks to Neymar and Messi, but goals from Ever Banega and Kevin Gameiro either side of half-time saw Sevilla extend a 14-month unbeaten streak at home in the league.

Super substitute Gameiro is the proud owner of a superb minutes-per-goal ratio, according to Bleacher Report's Andy Brassell, pulling Sevilla within a point of Valencia, fourth, thanks to his 84th-minute equaliser:

Real Madrid were overjoyed that Cristiano Ronaldo's yellow card against Rayo Vallecano earlier this week was rescinded, with the Portuguese returning to open the scoring for Carlo Ancelotti's men against Eibar.

James Rodriguez and Toni Kroos missed out through suspension, but Ancelotti's men showed their strength in depth as Javier Hernandez and Jese Rodriguez each got on the scoresheet to seal a 3-0 victory.

Ronaldo bagged his 38th goal of the 2014-15 La Liga campaign directly from a free kick, while Chicharito and Jese each revelled in their rare opportunities as part of the starting lineup to close the gap on Barca.

After the result, Ancelotti proclaimed that an increased tempo within Real's approach has benefited Ronaldo as much as anyone else, per Goal's Rupert Fryer:

"

Ronaldo is really enjoying the play because the team is now playing with more speed, and that gives him more chances in front of goal. The team's improved and we are making more opportunities.

I had thought about giving Cristiano Ronaldo a rest, but I thought he had recovered well after Wednesday's game. He is always eager to play and to score. That is what makes the difference with other strikers.

"

Atletico were less fortunate in their trip to Andalusia and could take only a point from Malaga, despite Antoine Griezmann's best attempts to lead Los Rojiblancos with a brace.

After going through a blurry patch in form, Diego Simeone's star forward is looking back to his best. Griezmann's 78th-minute strike salvaged a point for the visitors, being awarded despite there being some initial controversy, per Spanish newspaper AS:

The same might not be said of Fernando Torres, though, after the Spaniard helped Malaga equalise with an own-goal just 12 minutes after Griezmann opened the scoring, the first of his career, according to Eurosport:

A point means Atleti move four points clear of Valencia, fourth, but Los Che now have an opportunity to reduce the deficit when they play host to Levante on Monday evening.

Lower down the division, Celta Vigo scored more than three goals in a single match for the first time this league season, crushing Rayo Vallecano 6-1 on Saturday evening, per Spanish newspaper AS:

The harshest disappointment for Rayo is to think they were 1-0 up after just two minutes, but four goals from Santi Mina and a brace from Joaquin Larrivey ensured they plummeted in major fashion.

Celta move into the top half of the table up to ninth thanks to their thumping victory, doing their goal difference no harm in the meantime, which could come to be a big factor come campaign's end.

There were goals in the other late kickoff, too, as Almeria ran to a 3-0 win over Granada to move outside the relegation zone, level on points with Elche and Levante.

Thomas Partey bagged two goals at the ends of each half while Javier Espinosa bagged a third for Sergi Barjuan's men, the manager's first victory since taking over Almeria's helm.
