Monday Recap

Looking to bounce back from consecutive league defeats to United and Arsenal, Liverpool were largely impressive on Monday as they downed Newcastle 2-0.
The Magpies have now lost five in a row in the league, and although relegation is unlikely, it was another dispiriting performance from John Carver's side.
The north-east outfit could barely get hold of the ball early in the first half and conceded to Raheem Sterling in the ninth minute.
It was a well-worked goal from the young Englishman, Sterling receiving the ball from skipper Jordan Henderson and cutting inside on the left to curl a finish home.
WhoScored.com gives an indication of just how important Sterling has been for Liverpool this term:
Liverpool completely dominated the first half but failed to make their influence pay, and it could arguably have been 1-1 at half-time as Newcastle should have had a penalty.
Dejan Lovren made a rash challenge on Ayoze Perez in the box, and certainly it looked as though Lee Mason should have pointed to the spot, per beIN Sports:
As it was, the Reds went into the break at half-time 1-0 up, and although Newcastle improved, Liverpool still looked the more threatening in the second period.
Joe Allen doubled the hosts' lead in the 70th minute, a snap shot inside the box after a scrambled corner powering into the roof of the net.
Things then went from bad to worse for Newcastle as Moussa Sissoko was issued a second yellow card and sent off in the 84th minute, and he was lucky to escape a straight red card for a shocking challenge on Lucas, per the Liverpool Echo's James Pearce:
It could have been more convincing for Liverpool, as Sterling missed a couple of sitters, but it was a return to winning ways in the league for Brendan Rodgers' men.
While unlikely, a top-four finish is still a possibility for Liverpool, and with City as poor as they are at the moment, the Reds could really pile the pressure on with another win against West Brom in their next fixture.
Sunday Recap

Manchester United crushed local rivals Manchester City 4-2 at Old Trafford to move four points clear of the reigning champions.
Sergio Aguero put the visitors ahead early on after a scintillating start from the hosts. But City could not preserve the blistering tempo, and United hit back before the break with goals from Ashley Young and Marouane Fellaini.
In the second half, Juan Mata and Chris Smalling added the gloss to a fine display from the hosts as City—who reduced the deficit late on after another Aguero goal—capitulated on the road yet again.

The game started at an unbelievable pace, with City straight on the front foot. Manuel Pellegrini’s men were aggressive from the off, forcing the Red Devils into mistakes and creating a flurry of openings. With the quality in the champions’ offensive line, it didn’t take long for them to edge in front.

James Milner threaded a superb ball through to David Silva in the channel, and the Spanish magician took his time and put one on a plate for Aguero in the middle. As noted by WhoScored.com, it ended a mini-drought of sorts for the Argentina international:
But United have made massive strides in recent weeks and came roaring back in the contest. They were level just five minutes after Aguero’s opener when Young bundled home a cross at the second attempt and the winger turned supplier not long after, floating one on to the head of Fellaini at the back post to put the Red Devils 2-1 ahead.

As noted by Jonathan Northcroft of The Sunday Times, it’s been a remarkable turnaround in fortunes for the burly Belgian:
United went in 2-1 in front at the break and were met with a raucous roar from the Old Trafford crowd. In another boost for the Red Devils, City skipper Vincent Kompany—who was lucky to avoid a red card in the first half for a high tackle on Daley Blind—was replaced by Eliaquim Mangala.
After the interval, the game settled down a little, with neither side seemingly willing to commit too many men forward in search of the next goal. But in the 66th minute, United carved City open superbly, with Wayne Rooney threading through a pass to Mata, who made no mistake from close range.

Henry Winter of The Telegraph summed it up well, even though the goal did have a hint of offside about it:
Buoyed by that goal, United looked for more, and more abject City defending let Smalling sneak in at the back post to head home unmarked. It was fast becoming a rout for the Red Devils, and despite a late Aguero consolation, they saw out the remaining minutes before the backdrop of an understandably jubilant Old Trafford crowd.
This was a massive win for United. Having lost the last four encounters in the derby, to get a victory over their local rivals was a crucial step on their route back to the summit of English game, and massive credit must go to Louis van Gaal and his players, who executed their tactical plan to absolute perfection.

From a sky-blue persuasion, it was another game that yielded big concerns. The style in which this team caved was not an anomalous instance, and five away defeats in a row really speak for themselves. With the title gone, City will now nervously be looking over their shoulder as they bid to make sure of their Champions League status for next season.
Earlier in the day, Chelsea strengthened their grip on the Premier League title, snatching a last-gasp win against Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road.

After a ferocious 90 minutes in which neither side was able to carve out much in terms of genuine opportunities, Cesc Fabregas finished smartly from the edge of the box two minutes from time. The win means that the Blues are now seven points clear of second-place Arsenal with a game in hand.
Both Fabregas and manager Jose Mourinho paid tribute to the significance of the victory, per the Premier League’s official Twitter feed:
From the off, it was clear that this was going to be a very difficult challenge for Chelsea. Fighting for their Premier League lives, the home side was outstanding in shutting off the space for its more illustrious opponents, and while openings were scarce in the first half, it was QPR who looked the more threatening.

As noted by OptaJoe, Chelsea were knocked out of their rhythm by the vibrancy of the hosts:
But the resolute defensive line of the Blues stood firm in a battle with the rumbustious QPR front two of Charlie Austin and Bobby Zamora, and as the match wore on, the league leaders grew into the game. Nonetheless, Chelsea’s attacking quality was unable to test Robert Green between the sticks—not until the final embers of the game anyway.

It was the kind of quality needed to breach the stern QPR back line too. Oscar and Eden Hazard linked up superbly in the left channel, with the Belgian pulling a pass back to the edge of the box for Fabregas to slam home.
As noted by Squawka Football, it was a goal that’s been a long time coming for the midfielder:
QPR can take great heart from their performance here and, with some more favourable fixtures to come, will still fancy their chances of getting out of trouble.
Even if Chelsea had drawn here, they still would have been major favourites for the Premier League title. But the manner in which they churned out a win in what was an otherwise-moribund display added further clout to their already strong championship credentials.
Saturday Recap
Aaron Ramsey grabbed the only goal at Turfmoor on Saturday as Arsenal clinched a narrow 1-0 win over Burnley to climb within four points of Premier League leaders Chelsea.
The Wales midfielder rose to put his side in front after 12 minutes, in turn booking the Gunners; eighth win in succession, a streak the BBC's John Bennett points out as having a touch of history about it:
Chelsea may still feel confident in their ability to run out the remaining fixtures and claim this season's trophy, but there's no question that Arsene Wenger's men are taking results with more confidence.
Goal's Wayne Veysey agreed during the Turfmoor victory that this Arsenal team have "something special" about them:
White Hart Lane was glad to see the back of Tim Sherwood upon his sacking from the Tottenham Hotspur helm last year, but a 1-0 win for Aston Villa on Saturday left the north London side displeased to see their former boss return.
Having led the Villans to an FA Cup semi-final, Sherwood built on his Birmingham success with a 1-0 victory against his old club, with Match of the Day's Gary Lineker only too quick to point out the hint of redemption:
Christian Benteke continued his fine strain of scoring form to clinch the winner in north London, pushing Villa another three points away from the drop zone, while Spurs' European dreams look uncertain as they drop to seventh.
At the Stadium of Light, Dick Advocaat's Black Cats were crushed under the weight of Alan Pardew's Crystal Palace, losing 4-1 as Yannick Bolasie rampaged to a man-of-the-match outing, per Squawka:
With that victory, Palace have won their last four games in succession and are just a single point away from 10th-place Stoke City, looking to make a late run at the top half of the table.
For Advocaat, however, the defeat will leave its mark on Sunderland's goal difference, while former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher is calling for Pardew to get a promotion:
Second-half goals from James Ward-Prowse and Graziano Pelle led Southampton to a 2-0 victory over Hull City, with Saints capitalising on Tottenham's defeat to take back fifth spot in the standings.
A win over Newcastle United on Monday would see Liverpool overtake the south-coast club once again, but Ronald Koeman's team can enjoy their revival and European hunt taking a turn for the better.
Looking toward the relegation race, Leicester City twice came back at the Hawthorns to claim a massive 3-2 win over West Bromwich Albion, the Baggies' second home defeat in a row.
The Foxes now lie just three points away from safety and are showing their top-flight campaign is far from dead, earning the praise of Kicca's Ian Stafford with a tremendous West Midlands win:
Elsewhere, there were 1-1 draws for Swansea City and West Ham United, who took on Everton and Stoke City, respectively.
Marko Arnautovic struck in the 95th minute to secure an extremely valuable point for the Potters at Upton Park, while Jonjo Shelvey bagged to equalise against the Toffees at the Liberty Stadium in Saturday's early kick-off.
