Bournemouth were made to fight for their victory at the Amex Stadium on Friday evening, as the Championship leaders struck late to seal a 2-0 win over Brighton and Hove Albion.

At the other end of the standings, Fulham twice lost the lead against Wigan Athletic to draw 2-2 at Craven Cottage, with Gary Caldwell clinching a vital result in his first game in charge of the visiting party.

Saturday saw Norwich City and Watford keep the pressure on Bournemouth at the top after travelling to Bolton Wanderers and Millwall, respectively, each emerging with wins in foreign territory.

Saturday Recap

Following Bournemouth's victory at Brighton on Friday evening, Norwich City, Watford and Middlesbrough all followed suit with two-goal hauls of their own on Saturday, each of which enough to emerge victorious.

The Hornets and Boro beat Millwall and Rotherham by two goals to nil, respectively, while the Canaries clinched a 2-1 result at Bolton to keep the two-point gap separating first from fourth.

Norwich's win against the Trotters came under uncertain circumstances as they entered the final exchanges drawing 1-1, but a 93rd-minute finish from Gary Hooper brought home all three points.

Likewise, Darren Bent bagged an extra-time finish for Derby County to seal a 1-1 tie against Brentford in Saturday's early kickoff, keeping up what OptaJoe shows to be a fine scoring record of late:

That point keeps the Rams in fifth spot and one point above Ipswich Town, who just about overcame Blackpool 3-2 to reclaim a berth in the playoff places.

Former West Ham United hopeful Freddie Sears was in sterling form for Ipswich and struck the first of their two goals against the Tangerines, while Christophe Berra clinched a crucial winner for Saturday's hosts. Ed Aarons of the Guardian hailed the talent of Sears, who scored twice in the space of four minutes:

Ipswich take up residence in the top six at Wolves' expense after Kenny Jackett's side stumbled to a 2-1 defeat at Birmingham City, despite initially taking the lead through Benik Afobe.

Rob Kiernan and Demarai Gray responded for the Blues either side of the break, but the Mirror's Alex Richards could only lump blame on Wolves for their own demise:

Neither Cardiff City nor Leeds United will have grand aspirations above that of a mid-table finish this season, but the Bluebirds nevertheless took a pivotal three points on Saturday following their trip to Elland Road.

The two teams came into the fixture level on points, but a 2-1 victory for the Welsh outfit sees them into 12th place, with BBC Sport Wales confirming the result:

The goals weren't as rife lower down the division as Nottingham Forest conceded a 1-0 home defeat to Huddersfield Town, while Sheffield Wednesday drew 1-1 at home to Charlton Athletic.

Forest will be particularly disappointed to have not broken their deadlock against the Terriers and stay lodged in ninth spot, 13 points off the playoffs and with their promotion hopes now a thing of the past.

Friday Recap

Eddie Howe's Cherries looked slightly lost for the opening 60 minutes on Friday, struggling to carve out so much as a shot on goal in the first half of their clash against Brighton.

The likes of Norwich and Watford looked on with glee as the table-toppers lurched on goalless, but Sam Cunningham of the Daily Mail confirmed their breakthrough in the 70th minute thanks to Yann Kermorgant:

The French forward bagged the 88th goal of Bournemouth's Championship campaign to pave their way to victory, but Howe may well be concerned with his side's stuttering start on the south coast.

Not only are the Cherries an offensive force to reckon with this term, but Cunningham confirmed that their tally of 105 goals across all competitions is a new club record:

Callum Wilson added a second to seal the 2-0 win for Bournemouth to take a four-point lead at the head of the table, hoping to see their pursuers drop points this weekend so that they might open up a cushion.

Fulham, meanwhile, showed a different strain of initiative against Wigan on Friday evening, opening the scoring after just four minutes thanks to captain Ross McCormack, per the Guardian's Alan Smith:

Former Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant brought the Latics level just 18 minutes later to give the visitors renewed belief in their fight against the drop, but Matt Smith scored to pitch the Cottagers in front once again.

Having done so well to put Fulham back ahead, Smith may have been left scratching his head as to why Kit Symons withdrew him with half an hour remaining, and the Craven Cottage home crowd agreed:

And Symons may have come to regret his decision after Wigan swiftly grabbed an equaliser thanks to Jason Pearce in the 69th minute, with neither side capable of finding the critical winner in west London.

A point in Caldwell's first game in charge of Wigan draws the Latics level on points with Millwall in 22nd, while Fulham go level with Brighton and now sit nine points clear of the drop zone.
