La Liga Results 2015 Week 29: Tracking Final Scores, Top Scorers for Matchday 29

Gianni VerschuerenApr 3, 2015

La Liga's top forwards return to action in Week 29, as the international break has come to an end and Spain's top division gets ready for the final push.

Just 10 matches remain between now and the end of the season, and following Barcelona's 2-1 win over Real Madrid in last week's Clasico, the Blaugrana are the favourites to win this year's title.

Valencia and Atletico Madrid face a real battle to finish in the top four and qualify for the Champions League, and the battle against relegation is as close as ever. Here's what the current standings look like:

Monday Recap

Espanyol were unable to steer their way past Elche and into the top half of La Liga on Monday after a 1-1 draw saw them settle for just a point on home soil.

Captain Sergio Garcia impressed to open the hosts' account after just 17 minutes with a dazzling run and strike from range, earning the praise of Spanish newspaper AS:

Elche hit back with a controlling stake in possession, per WhoScored.com, and eventually found their equaliser through Cristian Herrera on the 77-minute mark.

A share of the spoils did both teams good as Espanyol and Elche climbed to 11th and 14th, respectively, in what may rightfully go down as a fair result.

Sunday Recap

Real Madrid made a statement of intent on Sunday as they slammed nine goals past a hapless Granada at the Bernabeu.

Los Blancos won the match 9-1, with Cristiano Ronaldo bagging five goals and scoring an eight-minute hat-trick against the relegation contenders.

Gareth Bale opened the rout in the 25th minute after beautifully rounding the goalkeeper and calmly flicking the ball into the empty net.

But then CR7 took centre stage, scoring three times between the 30th and 38th minutes of the match, destroying the La Liga also-rans.

The mercurial Ballon d'Or holder added further goals in the 54th and 89th minutes, as French international Karim Benzema grabbed a four-minute brace, scoring twice after the second-half restart.

Diego Mainz capped an astonishing day off for the Galacticos, scoring an own goal in the dying minutes of the game, with Robert Ibanez grabbing a consolation for the visitors.

However, despite Los Blancos' heroics, Barcelona maintained their lead at the top of La Liga as they edged out Celta Vigo, winning away 1-0.

The victory came from an unlikely source, as Jeremy Mathieu scored Barca's only goal. The defender nodded in his header on 73 minutes after a set-piece delivery from Xavi.

The win keeps Luis Enrique's side clear of the threat of the Madrid clubs, with a four-point gap maintained.

Champions League hopefuls Valencia failed to gain ground on the top clubs, as they failed to beat a defensively sound Villarreal side in a goalless draw.

It was a hugely disappointing night for the home team, which simply could not find a way past goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo.

Los Che had the better of the action, but Villarreal's rear guard has been exceptional during this campaign.

Valencia brought on Alvaro Negredo for the closing moments of the match, but the striker failed in his pursuit to find a winner.

In Sunday's other match, Getafe scored a vital win over Deportivo La Coruna, beating their opponents 2-1.

Goals from Alexis Ruano and Sergio Escudero were enough to seal the victory, with Toche grabbing a consolation for the visitors.

Saturday Recap

Atletico Madrid moved back into third place on Saturday after claiming a 2-0 win over Cordoba, while Sevilla's win over Athletic Bilbao means they continue to put pressure on the top four.

Spanish newspaper Sport confirmed the win for Diego Simeone's men, with Antoine Griezmann and Saul Niguez providing first-half finishes for Los Rojiblancos:

Atleti haven't been in firing form away from home of late, with Saturday's result being their first victory in unfamiliar territory since the end of January.

Valencia will do their utmost to reclaim third, but as AS attests, Atleti's Champions League hopes would look more secure with four points separating them from fifth:

The team chasing them in that regard is of course Sevilla, whose hunt to break up La Liga's hierarchy was maintained on Saturday against a disappointing Athletic fight.

Unai Emery's side were two goals to the good within the opening 21 minutes thanks to Carlos Bacca and Aleix Vidal, maintaining their superb form at home, per Inside La Liga:

While their attack may match up with the likes of Valencia and Atletico, Sevilla's defence is what's let them down this term and Emery's side are at a significant disadvantage in the goal-difference stakes.

That being said, the team's home form is a brilliant foundation for the club to build from, with Phil Kitromilides of Real Madrid TV detailing just what a tough outfit Sevilla are to visit:

Malaga were unable to finish Real Sociedad off in their clash on Saturday evening, having taken the lead through Recio in the 55th minutes before conceding an 83rd-minute equaliser.

Ruben Prado rose to seal a point for David Moyes' visitors in the closing exchanges, earning the praise of ESPN FC's Dermot Corrigan in the process:

It's been over six weeks since the Anchovies last lost in front of a home crowd, but the Andalusians will assuredly rue not being able to close the gap separating them from Villarreal in sixth.

La Real, meanwhile, remain sat in 10th following Saturday's sharing of the spoils, but they could fall back into the bottom half if Celta Vigo manage to beat Barcelona on Sunday.

Levante claimed just their second away win of the league campaign in major style with a 4-1 demolition of Almeria on Saturday evening, the first time this season they've managed to score more than three goals in a match.

The Frogs soared against their fellow relegation candidates thanks to the prolific form of David Barral, who joins a prestigious list of players to have netted multiple hat-tricks this season, per ESPN FC's Dermot Corrigan:

With their three points in hand, Levante move three points clear of the bottom three in what could prove to be a critical result when it comes to securing their top-flight status.

Friday Recap

Forward Alberto Bueno's fantastic 2015 form continued on Friday, as he scored the equaliser in Rayo Vallecano's 2-1 win over Eibar.

As shared by OptaJose, the former Real Madrid man has been nothing short of sensational:

AS English saw the same thing:

The hosts had taken the lead against the run of play via Mikel Arruabarrena, who converted a penalty after 32 minutes. But Bueno answered back with a powerful header just minutes later, his 16th goal of the season. When you take into account Rayo have only scored 35 as a team, that's an incredible feat.

Rayo continued to push and took the lead two minutes later with another header, this time courtesy of Manucho.

The second half saw less football and more kicking, with cynical fouls taking place left and right. Ze Castro left the pitch with what appeared to be a severe shoulder injury, and Raul Navas was sent off after a flurry of cards in injury time:

The story of the night was Bueno, however, who has been tearing up La Liga in recent weeks. The 27-year-old has now tied Sevilla's Carlos Bacca for fourth in the top scorers' standings, and per BeIN Sports' Chris Moar, only Barcelona's Lionel Messi has done better since the turn of the year:

Rayo sit in ninth place following Friday's win, leaping over Real Sociedad in the standings, and with 38 points, they seem safe from relegation as we enter the final stages of the season.

If the team from the capital does stay up—and it seems they will—they'll have prolific striker Bueno to thank for it, scoring almost half of the team's goals.

Eibar's campaign continues to go from bad to worse, and manager Gaizka Garitano knows something has to change, per Inside Spanish Football's Jamie Kemp: "[on home support at Ipurua] We have to transmit things from the inside out. We cannot ask for anything if we don’t offer something, but we want them to enjoy us again."

Just three points separate the Basques from the relegation zone, and unless Eibar start winning again really soon, the Segunda Division might be waiting for them.
