Herrera's form throughout was quite impressive, as ESPN Tri hinted in its analysis:
Prior to the match, Herrera—who could have had another goal not long before star Javier Hernandez subbed in for him in the 59th minute—hinted he was just happy to be representing his country in the starting XI in any capacity.
"It's a beautiful challenge to be here. It's my first start with the national team and I'm going to enjoy it," said Herrera, per Goal.com's Jon Arnold.
Hernandez, also known as "Chicharito," helped El Tri's attack in his limited action, though the Real Madrid star continues to come off the bench in a reserve role despite having plenty of talent to start.
ESPN Stats & Info noted the history Hernandez could have made if he had been given more of an opportunity on Tuesday:
Chicharito scored the only goal in the prior friendly win over Ecuador and didn't do enough for El Tri to provide them with an insurance score in a tightly contested fixture.
Defensive midfielder Jonathan Dos Santos exited the pitch toward the end and was an instrumental part of the Mexican effort that produced a clean sheet, as ESPN Tri hinted:
Tom Marshall of ESPN FC applauded the 24-year-old's play:
There's no doubt Mexico dodged a couple of golden opportunities en route to securing the win in Tuesday's exhibition. Paraguay had a bit of a sluggish start before improving as the night wore on, doing their best to hang with El Tri's uptempo style of play.
Just before the half-time intermission, Paraguay's Richard Ortiz found the ball out of a corner kick but clanged his shot off the crossbar. Then a defensive breakdown allowed for another chance at an equalizer toward the beginning of the second half.
Osvaldo Martinez then blasted another strong attempt for Paraguay in the 75th minute, only to see opposing goalkeeper Meliton Hernandez turn it away.
Thankfully for manager Miguel Herrera's side, all of Paraguay's best efforts fell short, allowing Mexico's prospective Copa America squad to build on their previous triumph over Ecuador and improve team chemistry.
These friendlies aren't of the greatest consequence. On the other hand, El Tri are still in flux as Herrera tinkers with the lineup and need positive results as they sort through the proper personnel.
Next up for Mexico is a marquee April 15 matchup with the United States. It will be an interesting test for both clubs that will likely have more intensity than the average friendly. Paraguay have a friendly on tap against Honduras on June 6.
