Hornets vs. Clippers Will Play in China as Part of NBA's 2015 Global Games
Imagine, for a second, Lance Stephenson representing the NBA's global efforts in China. Now fast-forward to October, where that fever dream will become a reality. The Hornets confirmed the news Wednesday morning:
“The Charlotte Hornets are excited to play in NBA Global Games China and help grow the NBA’s brand internationally, while showcasing the strength of our franchise and team to millions of Chinese basketball fans,” said Hornets Chairman Michael Jordan, via the Hornets' official website.
“Basketball is more popular than ever, and Global Games China 2015 is part of our ongoing commitment to growing the game in the world’s most populous nation,” said NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, courtesy of the Hornets. “These games will not only bring the excitement of NBA action directly to Chinese fans, but will also provide the league another opportunity to experience the rich history and culture of China.”
Rick Bonnell of The Charlotte Observer first reported Tuesday the Hornets would head to China next October for a preseason doubleheader against the Los Angeles Clippers. The first game will take place Oct. 11 in Shenzhen followed by their arrival in Shanghai for the second game on Oct. 14.
“Clearly when we were the Bobcats, most likely this opportunity would never have come to pass,” team president Fred Whitfield told Bonnell. “It’s the culmination of a lot of things coming together at the right time: The equity value that has been built in the Hornets brand, its global appeal."

As the NBA continues expanding in the global market, it has taken advantage of a number of opportunities to take exhibitions overseas. This preseason, the Brooklyn Nets and Sacramento Kings made the trip to China, while the Cleveland Cavaliers and Miami Heat played in Brazil.
China is the NBA's largest non-American market, and NBA commissioner Adam Silver has mentioned even altering tip times to accommodate fans in that time zone. Giving the fans a chance to see Al Jefferson plow through the lane, Kemba Walker create off the dribble and Chris Paul and Blake Griffin dazzle in the open court is a surefire way to continue that effort.
It also can't hurt Jordan is the man seen by many as helping spark an increase in international interest.
