EPL Table: Updated Premier League Standings, Fixtures, Title Odds After Week 30

Tom SunderlandMar 22, 2015

A 3-2 victory over Hull City saw Chelsea restore their six-point lead at the Premier League summit on Sunday, while Manchester United clinched a dramatic derby win at Anfield.

Louis van Gaal's men beat Liverpool 2-1 in the early fixture to move within five points of Jose Mourinho's side, but the Blues re-established their cushion after taking maximum points from the Tigers.

Following their exit from the Champions League, Chelsea may be expected to make good on their early title pressure and tighten their grip at the top of the standings, but a talented pack remain latched on their heels.

Chelsea's Hopes in the Special One's Hands

As far as their domestic hopes are concerned, falling out of Champions League contention may have been the best possible outcome for Chelsea, although Mourinho assuredly won't see it that way.

The Blues were far from their most convincing en route to a 3-2 victory at Hull City on Sunday, with Goal.com's Peter Staunton criticising the west Londoners for ever allowing the Tigers back into the fixture:

It's lapses in form such as that which might give Chelsea's Premier League pursuers hope of surmounting the Blues' lead, but Mourinho's men now have their focus with no European distractions to account for.

Chelsea may consider themselves lucky not to have dropped points at the KC Stadium, too, with Squawka illustrating just how much pressure Hull applied on Thibaut Courtois' goal:

The Belgian is one of those figures bailing Mourinho's side out of some troubles of late, but a game in hand also gives Chelsea an extremely useful advantage coming toward the end of the campaign.

As much as one might favour the underdog, Chelsea by all means look capable of living up to the hype, living off the lead they've established and clinching this season's Premier League title.

Gunners Firing on All Cylinders

Having now won their last six Premier League outings on the trot, Arsenal are doing their bit to ensure it's not simply a two-horse race to this year's title, finding form when it matters most.

Arsene Wenger's side have scored 24 goals and conceded just six in their last 10 league matches, but the Frenchman isn't confident of his side's chances in attempting to hunt down Chelsea, per the Daily Mail's Damian Spellman:

"

Look, Chelsea have a good security and at the moment, I feel they have enough cushion to be quite serene. We have Manchester City in front of us and behind us, it is tight as well - the only thing we can do is to win our games.

I think Chelsea have too much security. I just think at the moment we are not concluding, we are in a fight. You have seen the game today - in every game, we need to turn up and fight until the last minute to get the points.

That's what we have to do, just go for the next game and win it. Look, the players want to do as well as they can. We know we have a fight first to be in the top four. We will go step by step, game by game.

"

Wenger is correct to assert a one-game-at-a-time approach, neither eager to get ahead of himself nor see his side completely ruled out of the silverware debate.

Saturday's 2-1 win at Newcastle United was a prime example of a result not going all to plan, comprising its own share of frights. Writer Samuel Jay C depicts the Gunners' recent run of form, which makes for a hugely encouraging sight:

After the international break, Arsenal face the demanding task of playing host to a Liverpool side reeling from their 2-1 defeat at home to Manchester United but recent results they're capable of overcoming.

With just a point separating Wenger's side from Manchester City in second, top-two contention is already in sight, and the possibility of capitalising on any further Chelsea stumbles gives the Gunners hope.

Red Devils Rising

If some are tempted to discuss an improving Arsenal as potential title challengers, then perhaps it isn't too late to count Manchester United—just a point behind the Gunners—as out of the race themselves.

Chelsea's game in hand complicates matters, but after claiming a fourth consecutive Premier League win, Van Gaal's side are one of the division's in-form outfits. FourFourTwo's Sam Pilger described just how dominant the travelling side were at Anfield on Sunday:

After going through some moments of serious concern in his maiden campaign at Old Trafford, Van Gaal is finally seeing his side rack up the kind of dominant displays many predicted may have come sooner under his charge.

BBC pundit Gary Lineker is among those who believe in the Dutchman's tenure as United chief, pondering whether or not Van Gaal's critics will have so much to say in the wake of the Liverpool triumph:

Eight points still separate Manchester United from the summit, but the Red Devils travel to Stamford Bridge in April with the opportunity to take some of Chelsea's advantage away.

As long as they maintain current form and take results as they are, the revived powerhouse may be fortunate enough to see their peers drop points and launch a dark-horse run of their own.
