6 Top-Performing Quarterback Recruits from 2015 Los Angeles Elite 11 Regional
REDONDO BEACH, Calif. — The beautiful California weather was the perfect environment for nearly 100 quarterbacks to show their skills at Sunday's Elite 11 Los Angeles Regional. It was also the perfect opportunity for national unknowns to step to the forefront.
Of the six quarterbacks who competed in the event's "Pressure Chamber," the final event of the day to determine the camp MVP, three were without offers. One of those three, unrated 2016 prospect Patrick O'Brien, walked away with MVP honors.
The Pressure Chamber in past years has been a two-minute drill for quarterbacks to test their accuracy, game-management skills and overall decision-making abilities. This year, Elite 11 has changed its format, as the Pressure Chamber is a five-play format where they will have to throw with wide receivers and tight ends covered by defensive backs and linebackers.
"There are a lot of changes this year in the format, but I think it's for the better," said Super Bowl-winning quarterback Trent Dilfer, who serves as the event's head coach. "You get a better-skilled athlete working with the quarterback, which is obviously important. It puts a little more pressure on the quarterbacks, which we wanted."
In the end, O'Brien was the camp's top dog, but here are six quarterbacks—O'Brien included—who turned heads throughout Sunday afternoon. Each slide features a player comment from Dilfer.
Unrated QB Patrick O'Brien
1 of 6
Hometown: San Juan Capistrano, California (San Juan Hills)
Size: 6'4", 215 lbs
247Sports national rank: n/a
"Consistency" was the word of the day for Patrick O'Brien. Everything he was asked to do by Elite 11 coaches, he did—and did well. O'Brien is a big quarterback with a nice arm. He doesn't have any reported offers, but a solid showing in an outing like the Elite 11 will do wonders for his recruiting, particularly with the spring season approaching.
Dilfer's comments: "Patrick had a great day. I watched his film, and a lot of times you're not sure what you're going to get when you see a guy in person. He really adapted well to drill training early. He probably took the drills to the competition better than anyone else. He applied what he learned early throughout the day and just stroked. He showed anticipation and showed timing. He showed a large catalog of throws. He was really impressive."
4-Star QB K.J. Costello
2 of 6
Hometown: Rancho Santa Margarita (Santa Margarita Catholic)
Size: 6'4", 213 lbs
247Sports national rank: No. 34 (No. 4 PRO)
Costello entered the event as a favorite to win MVP honors. Although he wasn't named MVP, he did show why he's such a wanted recruit. Costello's arm strength and football IQ have earned offers from Alabama, Florida State, Florida and others. USC, Stanford and Michigan are in his top three, and he said a decision could come soon.
Dilfer's comments: "K.J. had a good day. He obviously looks the part, and he has all the accolades. Watching his tape, you can tell he needs to learn to throw the ball at different tempos and widen his base a little bit. Both of the the things, we addressed. We really worked on the stuff, and he struggled at times, but he was able to fix it by the end of the day. I was really proud."
4-Star QB Matt Fink
3 of 6
Hometown: Glendora, California
Size: 6'3", 185 lbs
247Sports national rank: No. 309 (No. 10 DUAL)
Matt Fink has all the intangibles a lot of college coaches want. He's got good size, decent speed and a sound mind as a dual-threat quarterback. Fink has seven reported offers from schools including Notre Dame and the Pac-12's Washington, Washington State and Colorado.
Dilfer's comments: "I'm really proud of Matt. I told him I wanted him to fail at some stuff. He's so talented, but we've got to make some changes with him, and he worked on it. He worked on widening his base and tightening his stroke. He didn't let anything get to him early on. He shook things off and kept working on the right stuff. He's going to be a heck of a college football player, and I think this process will really help him."
Unrated QB Dakota Miller
4 of 6
Hometown: San Marcos, California (Mission Hills)
Size: 6'1", 185 lbs
247Sports national rank: n/a
Dilfer admitted that he kept an eye on Dakota Miller for part of the Elite 11, which is always a good thing if you're a quarterback competing in the event. Miller isn't the biggest quarterback but won coaches and spectators over with his leadership and his competitive nature. Dilfer said Miller reminded him of an Elite 11 alum, Purdue's David Blough.
Dilfer's comments: "Every year, there's that one guy who doesn't look the part but plays bigger than his stature. Dakota looks that way on film, and in person, he's the same way. He ripped the ball over the yard, and he was really coachable. He showed some nice athleticism. He shows good linear speed on tape but didn't show a lot of lateral quickness; he showed really good lateral quickness [Sunday]. He really has a clean stroke."
3-Star QB Kevin Davidson
5 of 6
Hometown: Oakland, California (McClymonds)
Size: 6'3", 215 lbs
247Sports national rank: No. 742 (No. 41 PRO)
As the offseason preparation continues, Kevin Davidson continues to look more and more like an FBS quarterback. He had a productive day in Redondo Beach and impressed many of the Elite 11 coaches and spectators in attendance. He doesn't have a reported offer, but Stanford, Arizona State, Cal and Oregon State are showing interest.
Dilfer's comments: "Kevin had a good day. I've known Kevin forever, and he's leaned up a little bit and showed a little more athleticism. He has a great attitude and is super-coachable. He was one of the leaders within the group, so he showed that thermostat leadership I'm always looking for."
Unrated QB Tevaka Tuioti
6 of 6Hometown: La Miranda, California
Size: 6'2", 185 lbs
247Sports national rank: n/a
There's always an athlete or two on a mission to prove his worth among the quarterbacks who already either have offers or have drawn high interest from FBS programs. Tevaka Tuioti made certain that people will remain his name after Sunday. Tuioti made several big throws and showed poise, arm strength and accuracy. He could be a prime sleeper as a dual-threat quarterback for one lucky program.
Dilfer's comments: "Tevaka was a guy stealing reps all day, and that's what jumped out. He was the hungriest of everybody. He was at the front of the line, he was grabbing reps and he was getting after it. He really got better and better throughout the day."
