EPL Table: Latest Week 28 Results, Scores and 2015 Premier League Standings

Tyler ConwayMar 3, 2015

It's a short week across the English Premier League, as the clubs have only a couple-day break between their Week 27 matchups over the weekend and the beginning of Week 28.

Three matches were on the docket Tuesday followed by a deluge of contests Wednesday evening, many coming with implications atop the table. Manchester City and Arsenal each have the opportunity to clean up the scraps near the bottom of the table while Chelsea may be in for a test against West Ham. Manchester United will also be in action Wednesday when they travel to Newcastle.

As for Tuesday's action, there was a trio with relatively few table implications but a ton of excitement. Let's take a look around the Premier League and check out all the Week 28 action. Be sure to return Wednesday for that recap as well.

If close final scores are your flavor, then Tuesday was a treat. All three of the matches on the docket were separated by one goal or fewer, with the middle tier of the table battling things out to avoid falling down further.

Of course, a close final score isn't always indicative of a close match overall. On the scoresheet, Aston Villa defeated West Brom by a score of 2-1. On the field, these two teams were separated by about as much as two teams can be.

Aston Villa attempted 16 shots to West Brom's three, held possession for 58 percent of the match and consistently put themselves in a position to win. That said, it almost went for naught. Saido Berahino's goal in the 66th minute—on his team's only shot on goal, no less—put West Brom in a position to earn a 1-1 draw until the very waning seconds.

It was then, four minutes into stoppage time, that Christian Benteke earned a penalty and buried the shot to put Aston Villa ahead for good. The win kept Aston Villa alive in their chase to avoid relegation, which has increasingly become the club's lone goal down the stretch, as manager Tim Sherwood noted, per James Nursey of Mirror:

BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND - MARCH 03: Christian Benteke of Aston Villa celebrates scoring their second goal from the penalty spot with team mates during the Barclays Premier League match between Aston Villa and West Bromwich Albion at Villa Park on March 3, 20
"

We are improving every game and we are still alive and kicking. It's a massive football club and it is at the wrong end of the table. A Tony Pulis side is never dead. It was always likely to be a set piece. We kept at it and someone was looking down on us today. I'll try anything, we are at that stage.

"

The same could not be said for Sunderland or Hull City, who played to a 1-1 draw that allowed Aston Villa to inch closer to putting them in relegation. Dame N'Doye gave Hull City a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute they held for more than an hour of game time before Jack Rodwell netted a shot in the 77th minute to tie it up.

Sunderland now are only one point ahead of Aston Villa for that final pre-relegation spot. Sunderland are two ahead.

Elsewhere near the dregs of relegation, Crystal Palace were unable to pull off what was looking like a surprising draw against Southampton. Largely getting lucky via missed opportunities by Southampton's attack, Crystal Palace stayed in a 0-0 tie until Sadio Mane scored in the 83rd minute.

The win temporarily moves Southampton into fifth place ahead of Liverpool.

Wednesday's action seen all of the top clubs hold serve.

Chelsea, which continue to lead the table by five points with a match in hand, scored a tense 1-0 victory over West Ham. It was far from a dominant performance but the Blues were able to get the result they needed to maintain some breathing room.

Manchester City, Arsenal and Manchester United—the clubs ranked second through fourth, respectively—also won. They are going to need a major dip in form from Chelsea to catch up, but they are at the very least keeping the heat on the leaders.

Elsewhere, Liverpool and Tottenham both picked up victories. They are for all intents and purposes out of the title chase, but their Champions League dreams are still alive. Spurs also have an extra game to play to make up some additional ground.

In the end, it was mostly a status quo week around the Premier League and that's good news for Chelsea.
