Manchester United struggled in the first half against Sunderland but pulled away for a 2-0 win in the second, in part thanks to referee Roger East.
The 49-year-old awarded the hosts a—correct—penalty in the 64th minute after John O'Shea brought down Radamel Falcao and proceeded to hand Wes Brown the red card, even after the two Black Cats pleaded with the official he had penalised the wrong player.
