Luis Suarez stole the show in Barcelona's 3-1 win over Granada, scoring and assisting as the Blaugrana marched to a comfortable win. Ivan Rakitic and Lionel Messi scored the other goals for the Catalans, while Fran Rico found success from the penalty spot for the hosts.
The Uruguay international was lucky to still be on the pitch, seeing an early yellow card for a clear elbow, but he more than made up for his early transgression. Squawka shared his final stats:
Rakitic also put in a fantastic shift in the centre of the pitch, while Neymar looked a little off, according to Sport's Rik Sharma:
The Catalans climb to within two points of La Liga leaders Real Madrid with the result, and with Los Blancos drawing 1-1 in-form Villarreal on Sunday, Barcelona are the big winners of the weekend.
The title race is heating up quickly, and Barcelona's front line is finally catching fire. As shared by BeIN Sports USA, manager Luis Enrique believes the striker has emerged as one of the club's most integral players:
Alberto Bueno had himself a special day, calling all four goals in Rayo Vallecano's 4-2 win over Levante. That in itself would be impressive, but the striker took things one step further—he scored all of his goals in the span of 14 minutes, via Squawka:
Levante had taken the lead through Victor Casadesus before the 26-year-old exploded, going through what will undoubtedly the hottest stretch of his career.
The forward seemed almost humbled after the match, as shared by Inside Spanish Football:
Getafe's Alvaro Vazquez scored twice in a 3-2 loss against Malaga, while Almeria and Deportivo La Coruna played out a scoreless draw.
La Liga's Week 25 kicked off on Friday, as Espanyol beat Cordoba, 1-0, at home in a match fans and spectators will want to forget as quickly as possible.
Apart from a moment of genius from Abraham Gonzalez, who scored a stunning long-range shot just before half-time, fans were treated to a dull contest between a team focused on their upcoming Copa del Rey clash with Athletic Bilbao and a squad simply incapable of producing any better.
As shared by La Liga Time, Cordoba are in trouble:
"Sixth consecutive defeat for Córdoba, bottom of the table. They need to many chances to score. Espanyol didn’t need much to win the game.
— La Liga Time (@laligatime) February 27, 2015"
Cynical fouls and empty possessions dominated the first 43 minutes of the match, before Abraham decided he had seen enough and unleashed a powerful drive from long range seemingly out of nowhere.
The goal certainly woke up Sport's Samuel Marsden:
It was the first really good chance for the hosts, who seemingly already had their minds on Bilbao. Meanwhile, Cordoba started the match without on-loan star Bebe for some reason, and their attacking output suffered as a result.
Marsden couldn't be happier that he was introduced at half-time:
The Manchester United man added a pinch of creativity to the Cordoba side, leading to one good chance midway through the second half. Bebe himself found some space in good position, but he blasted his shot well over the bar.
The loanees didn't get the job done for the visitors in the end, but per Marsden, they made enough of an impression for the squad to be hopeful the group can pull them out of the relegation zone:
Despite his team's poor outlook, manager Miroslav Djukic remains optimistic, via Inside Spanish Football's Heath Chesters:
"We want to recover our defensive solidity will be paramount. Will work hard and when we function well, we’re very much capable of beating any team.
When you’re losing every week seems bad, but you can only turn such a negative dynamic around with hard work. We have a strong desire to change our sensations.
"
Cordoba sit dead last in La Liga, at least six points from safety if you factor in goal differential. With the losing streak now stretching six matches, things aren't looking up for Djukic's men.
Espanyol certainly didn't outclass them on Friday but did enough to walk away with the win, something virtually every team has been able to do this season. Unless things change drastically in the coming weeks, Cordoba are on their way down.
