Top Players for Day 4

Joao Moutinho, Monaco

LONDON, ENGLAND - FEBRUARY 25: Mesut Oezil of Arsenal is challenged by Joao Moutinho of Monaco during the UEFA Champions League round of 16, first leg match between Arsenal and Monaco at The Emirates Stadium on February 25, 2015 in London, United Kingdom

Very few gave Monaco much of a chance of getting a result at the Emirates on Wednesday, received wisdom suggesting Arsenal finally had a winnable tie in the last 16 of the Champions League.

However, Monaco had different ideas, particularly Joao Moutinho who ran the game for the Ligue 1 outfit, particularly in the second half when they really came into the contest after Kondogbia's first-half strike against the run of play—assisted by Moutinho.

Moutinho was effortlessly comfortable on the ball for much of the night, per football journalist Stefan Bienkowski, his performance after the break essential to Monaco's eventual dominance:

After Berbatov's hammer-blow of a second goal early in the second half, Moutinho opened up his game, producing a couple of deft flicks and drives into the box which saw Arsenal pushed onto the back foot.

The Portuguese has often threatened to be a truly world-class player, and Wednesday saw him produce a performance worthy of such a title.

Dimitar Berbatov, Monaco

Former Tottenham Hotspur man Berbatov arrived at the Emirates as a known quantity to Arsenal after his many years in the Premier League and having visited north London on numerous occasions, and with some success, per Opta:

After an anonymous first half, he came into his own after the break—as did many of the Monaco side—and was coolness personified as he netted in the 53rd minute after a quick counter-attack following Per Mertesacker's mistake.

The German left his man, allowing Anthony Martial time to square to the Bulgarian who fired into the top corner with consummate ease, sparking an appropriate response from football writer Kristof Terreur:

Berbatov backed up his goal with a string of sublime touches, and he will be a threat again in the return leg should Arsenal defend as poorly.

Hakan Calhanoglu, Bayer Leverkusen

Calhanoglu's strike was the difference for Bayer Leverkusen as they beat last year's finalists Atletico Madrid 1-0 at home on Wednesday.

It came in the 57th minute and was fully deserved for the German outfit, the 21-year-old Turk powering into the top corner from a tight angle, after receiving the ball on the right from Karim Bellarabi's clever backheel.

Bayer performed terrifically and take a one-goal lead into the second leg, with various players stepping up to the plate, as noticed by Bundesliga expert Clark Whitney:

Calhanoglu's strike could end up being absolutely vital as Bayer bid to make the last eight of the Champions League.
