Sherwood Named Villa Manager

Saturday, Feb. 14

Aston Villa announced that Tim Sherwood was their new manager on Saturday:

"

Aston Villa Football Club are delighted to announce the appointment of Tim Sherwood as our new manager.

Tim, 46, joins after a long and successful coaching career with Tottenham, culminating a short but successful period as manager, and has agreed a contract that will see him take charge until the end of season 2017-18.

[...]

Tom Fox, Aston Villa chief executive: "Randy and I are really pleased that Tim has decided to join the club.

"Tim had a fantastic career at Tottenham, not only in his brief spell as first-team manager but, just as importantly, in the role he played in developing young talent.

"We are determined to build a football operation with a long-term vision and a commitment to youth development.

"We strongly believe Tim has the qualities to get the best out of our current squad and help us build and develop for the future."

"

On Feb. 13, Duncan Castles of The Sunday Times reported that Sherwood is the clear frontrunner to be Aston Villa's manager.

ESPN named Sherwood among the early favorites to land the job on Feb. 12

Avram Grant Claims Prince William Asked Him to Take Villa Job

Friday, Feb. 13

Avram Grant told reporters that Prince William asked him to take over the vacant Aston Villa management job, according to Ashley Clements of the Daily Mail

"

He told Sky Sports: ‘Aston Villa is a great club, with great fans and it is an honour to have my name mentioned with them, but I want to continue with Ghana for the next two years, until the end of my contract. I enjoy managing Ghana very much,’ Grant told Sky Sports.

‘I met Prince William and he asked me “why don’t you come to Aston Villa?”. I said “when you become the chairman, I will come”.

‘As long as my name is mentioned, I feel good with this, but not more than that. I want to continue with Ghana.’

Villa Will Not Name Interim Manager

Friday, Feb. 13

Sky Sports reported that Aston Villa is looking for a permanent replacement for Paul Lambert, not an interim to serve until the end of the season:

"

Sky Sports understands the preference at Villa Park is to make a direct replacement for Lambert, who left the club on Tuesday, rather than bring in a coach to take control of the first team for the remaining fixtures of the season.

It is believed Villa are strongly considering USA coach Jurgen Klinsmann as an option, while Tim Sherwood’s position may have been weakened by the appointment of Chris Ramsey as permanent QPR manager.

McClaren Rules Out Villa Move

Thursday, Feb. 12

According to The Telegraph, Derby County manager Steve McClaren has ruled out a move to Aston Villa:

"

'I have a job to do here and I'm solely focusing on trying to get Derby into the Premier League,' he told skysports.com

'We've got a very, very good chance and everything else is speculation. We've got 16 games to go and have a chance of achieving what we want to achieve and I'm not going to walk away from it.

As for Villa, who are the Barclays Premier League's lowest scorers and currently in the relegation zone, McClaren added: 'No doubt who goes in, it is a very good job, a big job and a sleeping giant.

'And someone is going to be very lucky to get that.'

Klinsmann, Sherwood and Clement Considered 'Favourites' for Villa Job

Thursday, Feb. 12

A trio of candidates reportedly are among the "favourites" for the Villa post. According to ESPN, United States national team boss Jurgen Klinsmann, former Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood and Real Madrid assistant coach Paul Clement are currently the front-runners to succeed Lambert.

Oddschecker paints a different picture, though. Although Sherwood is outlined as most likely to take the job, Glenn Hoddle, Michael Laudrup and Steve McClaren sit ahead of Klinsmann. At the time of writing, odds of up to 66-1 are offered for Clement to take the hot seat.

We can expect the numbers to shift quickly, as Lerner works to ensure Villa hold onto their accolade of competing in every Premier League season.
